Winona Ryder, star of 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,' shares what turned her off about filmmaking.
At 15 years old, Ryder made her breakout role as Lydia Deetz in the 1988 film 'Beetlejuice.'
In the late '80s and '90s, Winona Ryder gained popularity with her roles in "Heathers" and "Edward Scissorhands," but later took a break from the limelight in the early 2000s.
In a recent interview with Esquire U.K., the actress discussed how challenging experiences on set influenced her outlook on the industry.
"She shared with the outlet that she had experienced sexual harassment from multiple people in her twenties and thirties. While it wasn't an assault, the behavior was inappropriate and left her feeling uncomfortable. Despite the challenges, she was fortunate to have recognition, which helped minimize the frequency of such incidents."
Ryder frequently felt like she was "negotiating" and pondering what would transpire if she voiced her unease, all while dealing with someone who was "extremely creepy."
She only realized how messed up it was when recounting her experiences to her "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" co-star Jenna Ortega.
"In hindsight, it made her dislike making movies even more. She remembered actors always saying that when it stops being exciting, it's time to leave, which she took to heart."
Justin Theroux discusses his role as Winona Ryder's love interest in the sequel of "Beetlejuice."
Ryder stated that she encountered inappropriate behavior on set, including drunken advances from others. She would laugh off the advances in the moment but found it invasive when people would touch her.
At the age of 15, Ryder made her breakout role as Lydia Deetz in "Beetlejuice" (1988), which was followed by her starring roles in "Little Women," "Girl, Interrupted," "Alien: Resurrection," and other films. However, she took a step back from Hollywood following her 2001 arrest for shoplifting.
In December 2001, the Academy Award-nominated actress was arrested for shoplifting $5,500 worth of clothes from a retail store in Beverly Hills. The arrest had a significant impact on her career and was one of the reasons she decided to step away.
"It's amusing because there are numerous myths surrounding that tale, but it was entirely my own belief that I was heading to my car to retrieve something," Ryder remarked. "I recall being informed that I was going to be incarcerated. I was taken aback and questioned, 'What do you mean? I don't understand.'"
"I think in retrospect, it really soured [her on making movies]. All the great actors always told me that when it stops being amazing, you gotta get out. I really took that to heart." — Winona Ryder
After her arrest, Ryder "checked out" and received three years' probation, a fine, and mandated community service. Following this, she relocated from Los Angeles to San Francisco and acted sparingly during that time.
Since she had been away, she noticed a shift in the industry and a change in the culture of what was considered acceptable and rewarded upon her return to Los Angeles.
"She stated, "I was not in season during a specific period, which lasted approximately 10, 12, or 15 years. This period coincided with significant events in my life. However, looking back from 2000 to 2010, I realize that it was the most degrading time to be a woman. Even the cool people were involved in activities that should have been off-limits.""
In 2016, Ryder's portrayal of Joyce Byers in "Stranger Things" on Netflix catapulted her back into the limelight.
"From being the youngest person on set to the oldest, she acknowledges the nostalgia behind her casting and is fully aware of it."
