On Monday, the 63-year-old sang hits like "Old Town Road" and "Achy Breaky Heart" in celebration of President Donald Trump's inauguration, but Cyrus encountered technical difficulties during the performance.
"Can anyone hear me?" Cyrus inquired, after his guitar seemed to be disconnected following a shaky rendition of the Lil Nas X song. "Do you want me to perform more, or should I leave the stage?"
As a backstage aide came to assist, Cyrus said, "When faced with technical difficulties in life, you must persevere, or as President Trump would say, 'You gotta fight.'"
Cyrus sang "Achy Breaky Heart" a cappella, snapping his fingers and trying to engage the crowd.
On social media, people swiftly shared their views on the event, with one user calling it "the cringiest few minutes in entertainment history" and another referring to it as "a crime."
In a statement to People magazine, Cyrus said that she wouldn't have missed the opportunity to play the event, even if her microphone, guitar, and monitors didn't work. She was there because President Trump invited her, and she had a great time at the Liberty Ball. She learned through her years of experience that when the producer says "you're on," you entertain the people, no matter what happens to the equipment. She was there for the people and they had a blast. That's what rock n' roll is all about!
