While growing up on a wildlife ranch, Josh Brolin witnessed a man being bitten by a lion.
At age 8, 'The Goonies' star revealed that he had to clean animal cages and feed a wolf.
Josh Brolin is getting in touch with his wild side.
"The Goonies" actor remembered his childhood on his family's ranch in Paso Robles, California, where his late mother was "obsessed" with various animals, including "big cats, wolves, and bears."
In a recent podcast interview, Brolin recalled his mother's bold personality.
"My mother was completely open and honest, even when she was acting completely insane," he said on the "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" podcast.
"She served as a refuge for animals that had been unlawfully removed from the wild, and attempted to tame them. She would locate those responsible, have them imprisoned, restore their health, and either release them back into the wild or find the best possible zoo for them."
"My mother had zero filter, so as crazy as she was, and she was absolutely f---ing nuts. She was a way station for all animals that had been illegally taken out of the wild, and they tried to domesticate them. — Josh Brolin
Despite his mother's short stature at 5 feet 2 inches, Brolin emphasized that she was from Corpus Christi, Texas, and possessed a voice that was as deep and stern as any man's voice he had ever heard.
Bud Applehand, one of his late mother's workers on the ranch, was suggested by her to personally feed a "lion with a big mane" after it stopped eating normally.
"He needs help eating, so you must go in and show him how to do it. Sit next to him and demonstrate the process. Place your face in the bowl and demonstrate the proper technique."
The worker was hesitant to feed the lion after Brolin's dad "walked away" from the situation.
Brolin remembered, "Bud goes, ‘You just want me to get in the thing and just sit down?’ I mean, he didn't know any better, poor guy. And so he goes in there, and she goes, ‘Well, sit next to him,’"
"He instructed me to hold the bowl under my face and then lower my head as if I was eating. He seemed like a tough, rugged country guy," he said.
Brolin stated that he observed the lion reveal its "four- five-inch … long fangs" aimed at the worker's thigh before gradually closing its mouth around the man.
"As you listen to the sound of jeans tearing, you hear Bud say, 'His teeth are going into my leg.'"
When his mother was nervous, she would have a condition where she would laugh hysterically.
"She's trying to talk, but she can't because there's just wheezing with this laugh, as she says, 'The teeth are going into my leg, the teeth are going into my leg.'"
The lion remained still with its teeth clenched after its mother tried to scold it with a laugh.
After the lion released the worker's leg, the man shouted, "Get me the f--- outta here."
The actor stated that his brother received 60 stitches due to his interactions with animals and revealed that they followed their mother's instructions since childhood.
At the age of 8, Brolin recollected that he fed a wolf and tended to animal enclosures.
"It was a different deal, man," he said. "You go out into life and become an actor. It's all good."
