Trisha Yearwood was assisted in her proposal by country greats Merle Haggard and George Jones, as Garth Brooks proposed to her.
In 2005, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood became engaged.
Garth Brooks went to great lengths to give Trisha Yearwood a memorable proposal.
In his new book "The Anthology Part IV: Going Home," country music star Garth Brooks revealed that his May 2005 proposal included legendary country artists Merle Haggard and George Jones performing at Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, California.
Owens, inspired by Brooks' book, launched his nightclub featuring large bronze statues of men in country music. He named the event "Legends in Bronze" and included Haggard, Jones, George Strait, Bob Willis, Willie Cash, and Owens himself in the statues.
Bill Rains, the artist responsible for creating Brooks' statue, made it clear that once finished, the statue would endure for hundreds of years and remain unchanged. After hearing about the permanence of the statue, Brooks inquired, "Would you be able to add a wedding ring to it?"
The country music star received a peculiar expression from the rain, to which he responded, "It's because I possess a love that will mirror the same effect."
"And the woman I will love for hundreds and hundreds of years was going to be my wife… She was also going to marry three little girls." — Garth Brooks
In his book, Brooks revealed that Yearwood's work in Cincinnati allowed him to fly to Georgia and pick up her parents before the proposal.
In the spring of 2005, I had Jack and Gwen all to myself on a plane, and I asked them for their daughter's hand in marriage. They granted me permission, and now I have to ask the three daughters.
In the book, Yearwood stated that she wished she could have said she knew her now-husband was suspicious at that moment, but she was clueless.
Brooks sought permission from his daughters, Taylor, August, and Allie, to marry Yearwood. Brooks and Yearwood have been together since 2005, and he shares his kids with his first wife, Sandy Mahl. They were married from 1986 until they divorced in 2001.
"I instructed the girls to dress up for dinner. 'What's the purpose of dinner, Dad?' I inquired. 'We'll go out tonight and I'll inform you,' I replied. At this point, they were ten, eight, and six years old. We were having dinner when we began discussing the future. August or someone asked, 'Dad, are you planning to ask us about marrying Trisha?' I responded, 'Yes, I am.' And they were all okay with it."
"But this conversation goes beyond that. Since she doesn't have kids, if something happens to me, you'll have to take care of her. Therefore, you three and Trisha will have to get married, exchange rings, and vows."
This conversation with his three young daughters left Brooks feeling very emotional, as he wrote about it.
At six years old, Allie pats me on the arm and says, "We got your back, bra strap." That was it. "We got your back, bra strap." Conversation over.
Before the big proposal, Brooks sought his ex-wife's approval.
"If Sandy had said no, it would have affected many things. The brakes would have come on because we would have had to love together as a family. Fortunately, Sandy did not have any issues with Yearwood and Brooks getting married. In fact, she thought it was the "right move for our family.""
Fred Reiser, Brooks' friend, was the driving force behind the entire proposal. Reiser struck a deal with Haggard, promising to close the show if he attended the event. Brooks arranged for a private plane for Jones.
As they unveiled the statue, I held Miss Yearwood's hand. They had already revealed Haggard, Jones, and Strait. This was truly amazing. I looked at Trisha and pointed to the ring, and it felt like everyone was there, but only Trisha and I were present.
She shook her head from side to side, and I thought, 'Oh s--t, did I misread this one?'
"But yes! Yes! Yes!" was my first reaction when I saw it happen in front of all those people, even though it must have scared him to death.
At the conclusion of the evening, Brooks penned down that everything "turned out splendidly."
Brooks got married in Oklahoma a few months after tying the knot with his partner. His father served as the best man at the wedding.
Brooks concluded that the woman he would love for hundreds of years was going to be his wife, and she was also going to marry three little girls.
Since tying the knot, Brooks and Yearwood have dealt with controversy.
In 2019, during a work trip, Brooks was accused of sexually assaulting "Jane Roe," who had been working for him since 1999, according to court documents obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital.
In an Oct. 8 filing, Brooks denied the allegations and modified his complaint against "Jane Roe," accusing her of extortion, defamation, false light invasion of privacy, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
On Friday, "The Anthology Part IV: Going Home" by Brooks was made available.
