In the blockbuster sequel 'Top Gun: Maverick,' Powell and Cruise shared the screen.
Tom Cruise's role in the "Mission Impossible" franchise may be taken over by Glen Powell, according to rumors.
On Tuesday's "The Pat McAfee Show," ESPN analyst FaceTimed the 36-year-old actor to discuss rumors that Cruise wants him to replace him as the lead in the film series.
McAfee conveyed congratulations to Powell by saying, "We are simply calling to say congratulations, brother."
"That's something my mom would never allow," the "Anyone But You" actor stated.
"That's the worst gig in town, and Powell added, 'That's a death trap!'"
Powell started laughing after responding to McAfee, causing the host to shout, "He's lying!"
Powell's parents, Cyndy Powell and Glen Powell Sr., have appeared in all of their son's films.
The actor, 62, is renowned for performing his own stunts in the "Mission Impossible" franchise, and director Christopher McQuarrie has stated that the actor has "no limits" when it comes to the dangerous stunts he attempts.
Some of the jaw-dropping stunts performed by Cruise include hanging from an airplane, free-falling from a helicopter, climbing the world's tallest building, and jumping off a cliff on a motorcycle before base-jumping into a ravine.
The eighth installment of the franchise, "Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning," will be released on May 23, 2025. Although a future installment has not been confirmed, Tom Cruise has not indicated any plans to retire from playing Ethan Hunt in the IMF spy series.
In a July 2023 interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Tom Cruise expressed his desire to follow in the footsteps of Harrison Ford, who gave his final performance in the "Indiana Jones" franchise at the age of 80.
""I aspire to continue making Mission: Impossible films until I am the same age as Harrison Ford," Cruise stated to the outlet."
While working together on the 2022 blockbuster sequel "Top Gun: Maverick," Powell and Cruise formed a mentor-mentee relationship.
In July 2023, Cruise went to the premiere of Powell's action thriller "Twisters." He posted an Instagram photo with Powell on the red carpet, captioning it, "A fun night with friends, watching a movie!"
