Tom Cruise reportedly apologized for his postpartum depression rant, which targeted Brooke Shields, according to the latter.
In 2005, Tom Cruise apologized to Brooke Shields for his explosive interview on 'Today'.
Brooke Shields is discussing the apology she received from Tom Cruise, nearly 20 years after he criticized her for her "irresponsible" treatment of postpartum depression.
In her new memoir, "Brooke Shields is Not Allowed To Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman," the Golden Globe nominee revealed Cruise's apology after his explosive interview with former "Today" show host Matt Lauer in 2005, stating that the "Top Gun" actor targeted her "because he could."
In his interview, Cruise stated that Shields' postpartum depression medication was ineffective.
""Brooke has misinformation about the history of psychiatry, not a chemical imbalance," Cruise stated to Lauer."
Shields wrote an op-ed for The New York Times, criticizing Cruise's comments as a "disservice to mothers everywhere."
"I couldn't stand the sound of Rowan crying and feared the moments my husband would bring her to me," Shields wrote. "I wished for her to vanish and for me to disappear. During my lowest moments, I contemplated taking my own life or jumping out of my apartment window."
"My doctor informed me that I had postpartum depression and prescribed me Paxil. I was hesitant to take medication, but after stopping too soon, I experienced a relapse that nearly resulted in a tragic accident with Rowan in the car. However, the combination of medication and therapy sessions ultimately saved me and my family."
"Eventually, Tom Cruise apologized to me… said he was sorry, and that he felt cornered by Matt Lauer and that he attacked me basically because he could." — Brooke Shields
Cruise's comments demonstrated a "lack of comprehension" regarding postpartum depression, according to Shields.
"Comments like those made by Tom Cruise are a disservice to mothers everywhere," she said. "Suggesting that I was wrong to take drugs to cope with my depression and that I should have taken vitamins and exercised instead shows a complete lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general. If any good can come from Mr. Cruise's absurd rant, let's hope it brings attention to a serious illness."
In her book, Shields confessed that if the comments had been made before she became a mother, she would have remained silent.
"She wrote in Entertainment Weekly that she would have disregarded his absurd rant, content to let the famous man take control of her experience for his own (misguided) purposes. She believed his actions would speak for themselves."
Shields refused to remain silent and defended herself and other women against an uneducated actor who made irrational and dangerous remarks.
"Tom Cruise eventually apologized to me, but not publicly as he should have. Instead, he came to my house and said he was sorry, explaining that he felt cornered by Matt Lauer and that he attacked me because he could. Although it wasn't the best apology, I accepted it."
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from a representative of Cruise when requested a comment.
