Toby Keith imparted to Jason Aldean the importance of being "unapologetic" when expressing his opinions.
Jason Aldean will pay tribute to Toby Keith at the 2024 ACM Awards.
Toby Keith's decades-long career inspired Jason Aldean to remain true to himself.
Keith was admired by Aldean for always expressing his opinions openly, even if they differed from the majority.
Aldean stated in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital prior to the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards that Toby was a role model for many in the business, including himself.
"He was a guy who always spoke his mind, regardless of whether it was popular or not. He didn't care about the consequences, as long as he felt strongly about it and believed in it."
"From a personal perspective, that was always an inspiring message to me, reminding me that I could be an artist and stay true to myself while not being afraid to speak out. This message has always resonated with me."
The best advice Aldean ever received from Keith was to never apologize for being patriotic.
"Speaking your mind and standing up for your beliefs, even if others disagree, is important. Be true to yourself and don't apologize for it. That's good advice, I think."
In 2023, Aldean faced criticism after his "Try That in a Small Town" music video became popular online. The song was criticized for promoting violence and supporting gun ownership due to its lyrics and depiction of riots and flag burning in the video.
"Aldean stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that he believes there are many individuals who simply desire to attend work, return home, raise their children, and have peace of mind about their children's safety at school. Additionally, he mentioned that some people want their children to have the opportunity to enjoy activities like going to the movies without worrying about potential dangers."
"We're living in a Wild West-like state, and people are tired of the constant chaos and conflict," he said. "It's like a song where everyone can relate because they're sick of it."
Jason Aldean was inspired by Toby Keith to be "unapologetic" about expressing his opinions.
At the time, Aldean appeared to follow Keith's advice and remained firm.
"He stated that people are often hesitant to speak their minds due to fear of losing a job or friends, or not getting work again. They tend to align with politically correct opinions, even if they are not entirely right. He emphasized that it is important to speak the truth, even if it may not be politically correct."
On Thursday evening at the 59th Academy of Country Music Awards, Keith is being honored with a tribute by Aldean.
"As a musician, he's one of the best songwriters to come through town in a long time," Aldean said of the legendary singer-songwriter. "His longevity in the industry speaks for itself."
Keith, a country music star, passed away on Feb. 5 after a battle with stomach cancer, his family announced in a statement. He revealed his diagnosis in June 2022.
In the 1990s, "Should've Been a Cowboy" by Keith became the most-played country song, with radio stations playing it 3 million times.
Other popular songs by the artist were "I Love This Bar," "As Good as I Once Was," "Beer for My Horses," and "How Do You Like Me Now?"
Throughout his career, Keith received multiple Grammy nominations and was named entertainer of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards. He earned a total of 14 ACM Awards, including top male vocalist and album of the year.
In 2021, Keith released his final album, "Peso in my Pocket," and continued to perform despite being diagnosed with cancer. He took the stage one last time in December.
