Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren were struggling to cope with his sudden rise to fame.
Lauren and Thomas Rhett share four children together.
Thomas Rhett shares that his marriage with Lauren Akins, which is often viewed as perfect, almost collapsed.
"The country star shared with Us Weekly that despite facing arguably the hardest moment in their personal lives, they were becoming famous. This was during a time when they were adopting Willa Gray and getting pregnant while also having to be in Uganda for a year with frequent travel back and forth."
In 2017, the couple announced that they were both pregnant and in the process of adopting a child from Africa. According to Ugandan law, they had to foster the little girl for a year in the East African country.
The journey to parenthood was exhausting.
"I must admit, there were times when I doubted if the paper would be signed or if we'd have the meeting we needed. But prayer helped us get through it."
Nearly a dozen times, the couple flew between Uganda and the United States during the process.
"I would travel to Uganda and become a husband and father, then journey to America and pursue my passions for shows and music. However, our marriage was at a breaking point, and we both felt like something had to give. It was a difficult time for us."
But the couple persevered.
"Rhett stated that he and Lauren, who he's known since childhood, never considered giving up on their marriage. Despite his fixer nature and her stubbornness, they made it work. The simplest option is to quit, but when you persevere and keep pushing through, you'll become more resilient."
The "Die a Happy Man" singer explained that he was grateful for going through a difficult experience because it gave him a full set of tools to use in the future.
"The easiest thing to do is quit. But when you don’t and you keep grinding it out, you’ll inevitably become stronger." — Thomas Rhett on fighting for his marriage
Rhett, who married Lauren in 2012 when they were both 22, is proud to discuss his marital struggles and dispel the myth that he and his wife are the perfect couple that social media often portrays them as.
"At 26, it was nerve-wracking to present anything less than 'couple goals' on Instagram. Now, there's no pressure to pretend we're anything we're not. We are ordinary individuals who face the same challenges as everyone else," Rhett stated.
He enjoys discussing the challenges of marriage and parenthood, particularly in raising his four daughters, Willa Gray, 8, Ada James, 6, Lennon Love, 4, and Lillie Carolina, 2, to be good people.
"While some days are easier than others and moments of pure joy, many days can be difficult. I wish to impart my wisdom to younger individuals so they can avoid the mistakes I made."
Rhett believes that being "completely honest" is the key to overcoming difficulties. For young artists who are considering marriage at a young age, Rhett advises them to follow their hearts and make their partner the centerpiece of their lives, as they will be their rock for the rest of their lives.
