Theresa Nist's divorce from 'Golden Bachelor' Gerry Turner was caused by his incurable cancer diagnosis.
In March, Turner was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.
Earlier this year, Gerry Turner, the star of "The Golden Bachelor," experienced a decline in his health.
On Wednesday, Turner revealed to People magazine that he was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer in March, which significantly influenced his decision to divorce Theresa Nist.
"Turner revealed that he has been hesitant to discuss his split from Nist until now, but believes it's time to do so in order to clarify the mystery surrounding their relationship from February to April."
Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with cancer while Theresa and I were trying to find our lifestyle and living arrangements.
According to Turner, his bone marrow cancer is known as Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, a type of cancer that starts in white blood cells and is classified as a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
"Unfortunately, there's no cure for it. So that weighs heavily in every decision I make. It was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me. And I was a bit in denial for a while, I didn't want to admit to it." — Gerry Turner
"Unfortunately, there is no cure for it, which heavily influences every decision I make. It felt like 10 tons of concrete had been dropped on me, and for a while, I was in denial, unwilling to accept it."
In mid-March, after receiving his diagnosis, Turner informed Nist about the situation.
"Explaining my health to my then-wife was difficult, but the conversation was brief and she seemed a little bit awestruck by the news. That's understandable."
He continued, "I wanted my life to continue as normally as possible, which meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, and my granddaughters. However, the importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority."
Nist and Turner refuted the "rumors" that circulated about their split, calling them "unfair."
"After the initial shock of receiving devastating news wears off, we regroup and realize what's important to us, which helps us move forward. I hope people understand now that this had a significant impact on my decisions, as well as Theresa's."
Turner stated that he hoped people would view the decision as less impulsive and consider other factors, as there may have been more to it than initially thought.
Turner adopted a new mindset based on McGraw's song "Live Like You're Dying" after being diagnosed.
"I will cram as much enjoyment into my existence as possible and relish each second. When my time comes, I won't linger, but I won't have any regrets," Turner stated in an interview with People magazine.
Turner wishes Nist all the good luck in the world and hopes she finds everything she desires.
"That glamorous and starstruck time was truly a cherished memory," Turner remembered. "It was wonderful, and I wish it had a different ending. I wish we had found our way and solutions to our problems. Most importantly, I wish I didn't have a diagnosis that so strongly influenced my decisions and the direction I took."
During his tenure, Turner achieved several milestones on "Bachelor," including being the oldest star at 72 and becoming the first engaged and married "Golden Bachelor" in a short period of time.
In Costa Rica, he proposed to Nist by dropping to one knee and asking her to be his bride during the "Golden Wedding," a significant milestone event for the franchise that featured the first televised live nuptials in a decade.
During a joint interview on "Good Morning America" in April, Turner and Nist disclosed that love alone was not sufficient to sustain their marriage.
At the time, Nist stated that they looked at homes in South Carolina, considered New Jersey, but never made a decision after looking at numerous homes.
"I still love this person and have no doubt in my mind that I am still in love with her. I root for her every day," said Turner.
Nist agreed, "Yeah, I still love him."
