'The 'Weekend Update' segment on 'SNL' was criticized for its "classless" portrayal of United Healthcare.'
On December 4, UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson met a tragic end.
This weekend, some of "Saturday Night Live"'s audience were disappointed.
The "Weekend Update" segment of the sketch comedy show faced criticism after devoting nearly two minutes to discussing the recent murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, as well as the public's fascination with the appearance of the alleged gunman.
Colin Jost, a co-host, made a joke about the ongoing manhunt for the assassin who killed the CEO of United Healthcare on Wednesday. He said, "It's really telling about America that a man was murdered in cold blood and the two main reactions were, 'Yeah, well, health care sucks!' and 'That shooter was hot.'"
Several social media users criticized the commentary, arguing that it was insensitive to Thompson's family. The couple, both 50, had two sons together.
"The segment was disgusting and I couldn't watch it. The victim's family and friends are grieving right now," one person wrote beneath a YouTube clip of the segment. "I agree. I don't usually watch SNL, and the segment and comments supporting it have convinced me not to watch it anymore. Joking about someone's murder like that is absolutely disgusting... a family is grieving right now," a person responded.
Another user confirmed Jost's narrative by asking, "Is the shooter single?" The NYPD released the first image of the suspected gunman, without a mask, a day after the Wednesday shooting.
Michael Che joked that New York City police got a photo of the suspect after he was caught on camera at a local hostel, flirting with a female employee named 'Lucky S. Bechalive.'
"Classless," a user on X commented. "A long-time viewer of SNL, I don't consider myself particularly sensitive to any topic. However, in today's Weekend Update edition, they made jokes about the United Health CEO who was gunned down in NYC. That was really distasteful and disrespectful. SNL, you need to do better," another user added.
Jost also took aim at officials, in particular, the NYPD.
New York City officials issued a stern warning on crime this week: "If you commit a shooting in the city center, you'll need to quickly escape on a bike or bus," the official stated.
The shooting that took place three blocks away from here in broad daylight is just as crazy as the guy who bicycled away. It's likely that the police were busy guarding the Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Plaza on the same day.
The NYPD now suspects the murderer left the city on a bus from Port Authority. However, a Port Authority passenger who resembles the suspect expands the investigation. Jost's final joke on the topic was met with laughter from additional viewers, particularly those who appreciated the Port Authority punchline.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from representatives of "Saturday Night Live."
