The director of "Wolfs," which starred Brad Pitt and George Clooney, has canceled the sequel because he no longer trusted the streaming service.
After a 16-year hiatus, the 'Ocean's 11' cast came back together in a reunion film.
"Wolfs," despite being a reported hit, will not be getting a sequel, even though Brad Pitt and George Clooney starred in it together.
According to Deadline, "Wolfs" was the most viewed feature film on Apple TV+, and a sequel was previously confirmed.
The streaming service disagreed with the film's director, Jon Watts, and he pulled the plug on the project.
"Watts revealed to Deadline that he presented Apple with his final version of "Wolfs" early this year, and they were thrilled with it, promptly commissioning him to write a sequel. However, their sudden decision to shift from a theatrical release to a streaming release without any prior discussion or explanation left Watts completely taken aback. He found out about the change less than a week before it was made public."
Watts was taken aback when the streaming service decided not to release his film theatrically and he requested that they exclude the information about the sequel he was working on.
"They ignored my request and announced it in their press release anyway, seemingly to create a positive spin to their streaming pivot. And so I quietly returned the money they gave me for the sequel," he continued. "I didn't want to talk about it because I was proud of the film and didn't want to generate any unnecessary negative press."
Watts stated, "I loved collaborating with Brad, George, Amy, Austin, Poorna, and Zlatko and would be delighted to work with them again."
"Although it's true that Apple didn't cancel the 'Wolfs' sequel, I did, as I no longer trusted them as a creative partner."
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive immediate responses from representatives for Watts, Pitt, Clooney, and Apple TV+.
"But the truth is that Apple didn’t cancel the ‘Wolfs’ sequel, I did, because I no longer trusted them as a creative partner." — Jon Watts
The Venice Film Festival premiered "Wolfs" in September, with Clooney addressing rumors about the film's paychecks and release plans during a press conference.
After the theatrical release deal for "Wolfs" fell through, Clooney and Pitt returned portions of their salaries.
We wanted the release of the film in theaters, but we encountered some obstacles. We had a similar experience with the Clooney-directed biographical sports drama "The Boys in the Boat," which was initially planned for MGM but ended up being for Amazon. Unfortunately, we did not receive a foreign release, which was unexpected. We are still working to understand the specifics of this situation.
"He remarked, "We're all in this industry and facing challenges post-COVID. Despite the obstacles, many people will see the film, and we're getting a release in several hundred theaters. Although it would have been ideal to have a wide release, we're still making progress.""
In 2023, Clooney stated that he and Pitt had given some of their salaries back to ensure a theatrical release, saying, "Brad and I made a deal to give money back to ensure a theatrical release. At the time, that wasn't as popular an opinion as it has become in the last year and a half now."
In Venice, Clooney responded to a report from The New York Times that the "Ocean's 11" cast members received more than $35 million each for their roles in the movie.
"Clooney stated through People that the article was interesting, but the source of the reported salary was millions less than what he believed it to be. He added that it was bad for the industry if people thought it was the standard-bearer for salaries, as it would make it impossible to make films."
