On Jan. 3, the film director and writer took their own life, according to the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner.
At the time of his death, Baena was 47 years old and married to actress Aubrey Plaza.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that authorities responded to a call near Baena's residence. The victim was declared dead at the scene, according to the LAPD.
In 2011, Baena and Plaza met and kept their relationship private. The exact date of their marriage is unknown, but Plaza confirmed their marital status in 2021 through an Instagram post.
Despite being previously announced as a presenter at the Golden Globes, Plaza did not attend the event days after Baena's death.
