The author reveals that 'I Love Lucy' star acted as a matchmaker for Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio.
Norman Brokaw's son, Joel Brokaw, has penned a memoir titled 'Driving Marilyn'.
An "I Love Lucy" star introduced Marilyn Monroe to her second husband.
While dining out with her agent, Norman Brokaw, the 25-year-old actress was approached by William Frawley, who played Fred Mertz in the sitcom. He had an offer that she couldn't resist.
"Joel Brokaw, son of Norman, shared with Planet Chronicle Digital that his father took her to a live show in Hollywood called "Lights, Camera, Action," which showcased up-and-coming talent. After the show, they went to The Hollywood Brown Derby for a meal, which was the place to be seen."
Joel shared, "It didn't take long before they were noticed. William Frawley came over to the table and said, 'I'm having dinner with Joe D. He would like to meet the young lady. We'll stop by your table after we're done.'"
"My dad explained to Marilyn the significance of Joe DiMaggio after she asked, "Who's Joe D?" and revealed her lack of knowledge about baseball."
Brokaw, who represented numerous top stars including Elvis Presley and Clint Eastwood, passed away in 2016 at the age of 89. Joel has recently published a new memoir titled "Driving Marilyn," which recounts his journey from working in the mailroom at William Morris Agency to becoming its CEO.
The blonde beauty captivated DiMaggio, who was 12 years Monroe’s senior and had just retired from the New York Yankees, while dining with his close pal.
Brokaw seized the opportunity to unite the two.
"Joel said that he and Marilyn finished their meal first, and then the rest is history."
Through his uncle, Hollywood talent agent Johnny Hyde, Joel's father met Monroe. In her book "My Story," Monroe revealed that Hyde was infatuated with her and had proposed marriage.
""Joel stated that Johnny Hyde is a significant part of Marilyn Monroe's stories, as he was her superagent who believed in her and lived with her. He also risked his reputation to advance her career," the rewritten sentence reads."
"At the time, Joel shared that a lot of his peers had the attitude, 'That's his lover, and she's this year's blonde,' and many people didn't see anything special in her. However, towards the end of his life, he got her a contract with 20th Century Fox. Meanwhile, my father had just been promoted to be a junior agent."
Joel stated that Hyde suffered from a severe heart condition, which hindered him from attending events with his dream client. At that point, Brokaw intervened.
Joel explained that he had to take her to her auditions, which were for $55 a job, SAG minimum. He also took her to acting lessons, went to premieres and television shows that she was doing. As a result, he got to spend a lot of time with her.
The star of 'I Love Lucy' played matchmaker between Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio.
"Based on what he shared with me about her, it seems they had a fantastic connection. He admired her intelligence and they shared a wonderful bond."
Hyde passed away in 1950. He was 55.
In 1952, Brokaw and Monroe visited DiMaggio's table and started dating. They remained together for almost two years before getting married at San Francisco City Hall in 1954.
After several months of their wedding, Brokaw received a call from DiMaggio. However, according to the book, Monroe was no longer his client at that time.
"Joel shared that his dad gave Joe DiMaggio important advice during a pivotal moment in their marriage, as Joe was becoming increasingly frustrated with Marilyn's growing public profile and desire to be a stay-at-home housewife," said Joel.
"My father remarked, "I can't think of any woman who could persuade you not to play baseball for 56 consecutive games, and I can't imagine any man who could convince a young actress not to star in a movie with Clark Gable or Spencer Tracy.""
"Joel said that a lightbulb went on in Joe DiMaggio's mind when he received that advice, which he believed helped keep the marriage alive a bit longer. Additionally, that advice strengthened the lifelong friendship between my father and Joe DiMaggio."
DiMaggio and Monroe's marriage, which lasted just nine months, ended with Monroe filing for divorce, stating "mental cruelty" as the reason.
Brokaw and Monroe crossed paths in a unique way once more in 1962.
At the time, Joel's mother was hospitalized with schizophrenia, and Brokaw needed someone to help watch over his sons. Dr. Ralph Greenson, who had also worked with Joel's mother, suggested housekeeper Eunice Murray to help with the children's care.
"Joel explained that he had placed a lot of his patients with her to help them manage their daily responsibilities and keep an eye on them. A few weeks earlier, Eunice Murray had discovered Marilyn Monroe's death, which was a bizarre experience for him."
"Joel said, "I really liked Mrs. Murray, but I also felt like the energy was strange about her. That was part of growing up in Hollywood – a lot of strange stuff.""
In 1962, Monroe died from a barbiturate overdose at the age of 36. DiMaggio, who had reunited with her in 1961, organized her funeral.
Joel stated that he had an unwavering love for her throughout his life.
For 20 years, DiMaggio sent fresh roses to Monroe's grave twice a week. Despite outliving his ex-wife by almost four decades, he passed away in 1999 at age 84.
Marilyn was the last person DiMaggio wanted to see before he died, according to his attorney.
