The armorer responsible for providing Alec Baldwin with the firearm used in his fatal shooting has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
In the 'Rust' trial, Hannah Gutierrez Reed was charged with involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in New Mexico.
On Wednesday, a jury convicted Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the "Rust" armorer, of involuntary manslaughter for the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
On October 21, 2021, Halyna Hutchins was accidentally shot by a live bullet from a firearm that was being handled by the armorer on a Western film set.
In 2023, Gutierrez Reed was acquitted of evidence tampering, a charge she faced after investigators claimed she passed off a bag of cocaine during a fatal set shooting.
The jury deliberated for less than two hours at the New Mexico courthouse.
The trial of the armorer began on Feb. 21 and included testimony from weapons experts, FBI and Santa Fe County authorities, as well as crew members who witnessed the fatal shooting.
Gutierrez Reed's actions as an armorer were the main focus of the prosecution, with the argument being made that she did not perform her duties adequately.
"During closing arguments, special prosecutor Kari Morrissey stated that Hannah Gutierrez knew Baldwin was loose and didn't take any action, despite it being her job to do so. Her job was to tell an A-list actor, referred to as Baldwin, to behave appropriately with firearms. This was the job she applied for and accepted."
Gutierrez Reed's legal team argued that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to convict the armorer of involuntary manslaughter.
Jason Bowles informed the jury that they cannot enter the courtroom with a straight face and ridicule and condemn us while asserting that they have provided sufficient evidence to convict her beyond a reasonable doubt because they have not.
Gutierrez Reed's control was limited by things that happened on set, resulting in the fatal shooting, according to Bowles.
"The lawyer stated that the events that led to Mr. Baldwin going off script and doing what he did were outside of Ms. Gutierrez Reed's control, as she was unaware of them happening."
In 2021, at Bonanza Creek Ranch, Baldwin was holding a gun when he accidentally shot Hutchins during a scene staging at a small church, and Joel Souza was also shot in the shoulder. The jury heard testimony from Souza.
The cinematographer was killed when the gun held by the actor discharged during a close-up scene being staged by Hutchins and Souza behind the camera.
"During his testimony at Hannah Gutierrez Reed's trial, he recalled going inside the church again to see what the angle was. He heard Alec's voice and Halyna's voice, everyone talking at once. He doesn't have a clear memory of how long he was standing behind her, but he got up behind her to try to see on the monitor. Suddenly, there was an incredibly loud bang that was not like the half and quarter loads you hear on a set. Those are loud poofs and pops. This was deafening."
At the hospital, Souza didn't even know he had been shot.
"I knew something got me, but they kept saying – they kept talking about this bullet. And it just could not compute for me," he said. "I kept saying, 'You don't understand. No, no, no. This was a movie set. You know, that's not possible. You don't get it.' And they kept saying, ‘No, no, it is.’ And I kept insisting, 'you don't understand because this is not possible. It's just not possible that there's a live round. It's not. It just can't.'"
