Spanish authorities are accused of "burning" Shakira "at the stake" after settling a $15M tax evasion battle.
In November 2023, the 'Hips Don't Lie' singer finalized a multimillion-dollar tax fraud trial in Barcelona, Spain.
Spanish authorities were slammed by Shakira after settling her $15 million tax fraud case.
The singer of "Hips Don’t Lie" disclosed her legal battle and revealed what she found most frustrating about the tax fraud case.
According to People magazine, Shakira revealed to Spanish newspaper El Mundo that the most frustrating thing was seeing a state institution more focused on publicly burning her at the stake than listening to her reasons.
The Colombian music star admitted to settling her multimillion-dollar tax evasion battle to "protect" her two young sons.
Shakira stated, "I want my children to inherit the legacy of a woman who communicated her reasons with composure and at her own convenience, not under pressure."
"The most frustrating thing was seeing that a state institution seemed more interested in publicly burning me at the stake than in listening to my reasons." — Shakira
"I made the decisions I did to safeguard them, remain with them, and move forward in my life. This was not out of fear or shame."
She has two children, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, with ex Gerard Piqué.
Shakira stated that she paid more taxes than she should have, despite authorities trying to charge her for the past 10 years after she moved to Spain in 2015.
"The way I thought I could formalize my situation turned out to be a trap," she said. "Someone who travels a lot cannot be considered a tax resident in a place just because their partner lives there at the time."
Spanish tax authorities were accused by her of intimidating people, threatening them with jail, jeopardizing the peace of mind of our children, and putting undue pressure on us to break.
"Some may question why I am making these statements at this time," she said. The primary reason is my children. We have lived in an era characterized by a haughty attitude from the government, but bullying is not the same as providing explanations. Resolving issues does not involve burning one public figure annually as if it were an Inquisition trial in order to restore lost respect."
She stated, "No one can compose my narrative for me. Similarly, as with my melodies, I perform to live tranquilly once more, to turn the page."
Shakira was accused of evading 6.7 million euros ($7.2 million) in taxes on her 2018 income by using an offshore company, but the charges were dropped in May.
In November, she resolved a separate tax evasion matter with the Spanish government. According to prosecutors, the Colombian singer spent more than half of her time in Barcelona from 2012 to 2014 and accumulated a tax debt of $15.4 million.
During that time, the "Whenever, Wherever" singer stated that her official residence was in the Bahamas, which meant she did not owe the Spanish government taxes.
On the first day of the trial, Shakira opted for a deal even though she had initially rejected a prior proposal.
Shakira was fined 7.6 million euros ($8 million) and given a suspended three-year sentence, in addition to an additional 472,000 euros ($524,000).
If she had been convicted, she could have faced eight years in prison and a fine exceeding $26 million.
At the time, Shakira's legal team informed Planet Chronicle Digital that while they were confident in their ability to defend her innocence in a trial that would have ruled in her favor, she has decided to resolve the matter in the best interest of her kids, who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight.
Planet Chronicle Digital's Lauryn Overhultz contributed to this report.
