Scott Caan was cautioned by his father James Caan about the entertainment industry: It's a "funny" profession.
In the FOX series 'Alert: Missing Persons Unit', Scott Caan plays a starring role.
Before embarking on a career in show business, Scott Caan received a cautionary message from his father, James Caan, about the challenges of Hollywood.
At the 2024 FOX Spring Preview, Scott, 47, discussed his bond with his Academy Award-winning father while promoting the second season of FOX's "Alert: Missing Persons Unit" on Planet Chronicle Digital.
Scott says he didn't always know he'd become an actor.
"I was always an athlete, and my father advised me to stay away from this business, which he considered goofy, until I was 18 or 19 years old."
Scott did not always dream of being an actor.
"To avoid going to school, he came up with numerous creative ideas. He was determined not to complete high school and attend college. Eventually, he was fortunate enough to meet a director and landed a role on a film set."
Scott shared his dad's advice, saying, "It's ironic because he was quite contradictory. He would say, 'Don't take it too seriously,' but then he took it very seriously. He always just said, 'Work's not your life,' and I believe it's a valuable lesson."
"While being passionate and loving what you do is crucial, it cannot be the sole purpose of life. Ultimately, it can lead to one's demise."
James Caan gained fame as Sonny Corleone in "The Godfather," earning an Academy Award and a Golden Globe nomination for the role. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 82 from a heart attack.
James has five children, including Scott, who was also a child of the late actor.

Jason Grant is being portrayed by Caan in the second season of FOX's "Alert: Missing Persons Unit," which premiered on Tuesday.
The show follows the intense search for a missing person, led by detectives Jason Grant and Nikki Batista, who have a personal stake in the case as their own son went missing and remains missing.
"Despite the emotional toll of their son's disappearance, which caused their marriage to blow up, their bond remains."
Scott Caan discusses the moment he decided to pursue a career similar to his father James Caan.
The Philadelphia Police Department's missing persons unit is the setting for the show, highlighting the importance of every second in the search for a missing person.
Filming the entire season was challenging, according to what he told Planet Chronicle Digital.
The new season of the show was emotionally draining and mentally taxing as the protagonist struggled to determine if the adopted child was actually their own.
"The entire season was challenging. Although I believe we performed well, I think it was a great season, I'm glad that part of the show is over because it's insane to rewatch it for 10 episodes."
Caan, who portrays James Grant in "Alert: Missing Persons Unit," reflects on his own parenting style through his role. He and his partner, Kacy Byxbee, welcomed their daughter, Josie, in 2014.
"Letting your kids figure things out is the best way for them to learn," he said. "I learned the most when I was on my own. You can only teach them to be smart and good humans, but they'll still get into trouble. You can't hover over them."
The second season of "Alert: Missing Persons Unit" is currently being shown on FOX.
