Sam Moore, the renowned singer known for his hit song "Soul Man," has passed away at the age of 89.
Sam Moore, half of the Grammy Award-winning duo Sam & Dave, was renowned for his hit 'Soul Man,' which was later covered by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the Blues Brothers.
One half of the 1960s duo Sam & Dave, Sam Moore, has passed away at the age of 89.
The late singer, renowned for hits such as "Soul Man" and "Hold On, I’m Comin'," passed away on Friday morning in Coral Gables, Florida, due to complications from surgery recovery.
His singing partner Dave Prater died in a car accident in 1988.
For nearly two decades, starting in the early 1960s, a soul and R&B duo performed together, gaining popularity for their high energy and gospel-infused performances. This duo's influence can be seen in the music of artists such as Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen, among others.
In the 1980s, the Blues Brothers, featuring comedians Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, revived soul and blues music by covering Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" on 'Saturday Night Live'. They frequently paid tribute to Sam & Dave in their performances.
In Miami, Florida, Moore began his singing career in church on October 12, 1935.
In the 1950s, he and Prater performed in soul and R&B clubs, but they didn't meet until 1961 in Miami, as per the Associated Press.
Prater began touring with a new bandmate as the New Sam & Dave, which led to a contentious relationship between him and Moore, resulting in a lawsuit by Moore against Prater, as reported by the AP.
Moore struggled with a drug addiction in the 1970s, which affected his career. His wife, Joyce, assisted him in seeking treatment. Following his recovery, Moore began accepting roles he never expected.
He once told the AP that he had performed on many cruise ships and oldies shows.
"He recalled the old days when he had to audition for shows that featured oldies. He said, "I did a lot of shows with oldie shows, and I had to audition. But you know what? You keep your mouth shut and you get up there and you sing as hard and perform as hard as you can, and get the little money and go on about your business and try and pay those bills. I’m laughing about it now, but at that time, man, it was really serious.""
Moore's family, including his wife Joyce, daughter Michell, and two grandchildren, is still with him.
