Ryan Phillippe sought a closer relationship with God after finding himself in a "darker place": "A lot of time in prayer."
Ryan Phillippe revealed that he yearns for a connection with God after undergoing a spiritual journey following the completion of his latest film.
Phillippe, who grew up in a religious family, stated during his interview with Planet Chronicle Digital that his faith is of utmost importance to him.
"And it grows even more, every day," Phillippe said.
"Phillippe stated, "Prayer and studying things of that nature I find very fulfilling have consumed a significant amount of my time. I believe it is the most crucial aspect of life to devote time to thinking about, learning about, and understanding. As a result, it has become an integral part of my existence.""
After the completion of "Prey," Phillippe became more devoted to his faith and his connection with God.
Ryan Phillippe discusses the significance of his faith in his life.
"Phillippe stated, "I started reading religious texts again, but I was captivated by the idea of spirituality. At a certain age, the things that once brought me joy or contentment, such as success or wealth, no longer suffice. They no longer satisfy.""
"I wanted to have a relationship and understanding with God, and I was craving that." — Ryan Phillippe
"He said, "And so you look for more." I am grateful for what I have experienced and my children, but I yearn for a relationship and understanding with God."
"Since I embarked on that journey, I have never felt more at peace. My depression has vanished, and I am now a strong advocate for individuals to explore their inner selves and overcome their addictions."
"Prey," directed by South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil, follows the story of a couple, Phillippe and Mena Suvari, who are forced to flee their Christian missionary station in the Kalahari Desert after receiving death threats from an extremist militant gang.
"If their aircraft crashes in an animal preserve, they will have to fight for their lives against both humans and animals."
According to Phillippe, the project's simplicity made it require minimal preparation.
"He explained the idea as captivating, eliciting the thought, "What if this happened to me?""
The character in "Prey" was a "survival story" and it was easy for the Delaware native to relate to his situation.
"Imagine being on a plane that crashes in Africa. You're alone, and the location is a reserve for big game. It's only a matter of time before they find you, and they're hungry," he said. "That's how it struck me immediately."
Due to his character's struggle with doubts over his faith amidst dire circumstances, Phillippe was drawn to the role.
The spiritual thread in the story resonated with me, as my character grappled with questions about God, fairness, and surrender, ultimately reaching a state of numbness and resignation, stating, "If there is a God, save me. If not, I'll be devoured by this lion, and whatever happens, happens."
""I resonated with Phillippe's statement that many of us question or challenge things in our lives," he said."
According to Phillippe, the film's intense plot and quick pace would attract viewers, making "Prey" a 90-minute thrilling experience.
""
"He continued, "And it's like, ‘What do you have?’" he said. "‘What is the mettle of yourself, of your being?’ Like, ‘How do you survive in an unsurvivable situation?’ And you know we won't give away who does or doesn't survive. Not very many do.""
"From my perspective, the curiosity of the audience during 'Prey' will be centered on the question, 'What if this happened to me?' I believe this is a powerful way to engage the audience."
During an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Phillippe discussed his amicable co-parenting arrangement with ex-wife Reese Witherspoon.
Eva and Deacon, the children of the former couple who were married from 1999 to 2008, are currently 24 and 20 years old, respectively.
Ryan Phillippe discusses how he and ex-wife Reese Witherspoon have set positive examples for their children.
"We never had a hard time of it," said the "Crash" star. "We were always so devoted, even once we were no longer together."
In messy situations, the kids are often used as pawns or to hurt the other parent, but we never did any of that.
"But she and I have a friendship, and we still have calls about various things in their lives, and it works out nice." — Ryan Phillippe on ex Reese Witherspoon
He stated, "We never spoke negatively about one another." Additionally, "We consistently stood together in support of them, and now they are both adults.
"Despite not being romantically involved, she and I maintain a friendship, and we continue to have conversations about various aspects of their lives, which works out well."
Ava, who appeared on "Daily Pop" in 2021, admitted that she hadn't yet decided on a career path, but acting wasn't entirely off the table. While studying at the University of California, Berkeley, Ava began her modeling career and has since worked on campaigns for Beyoncé's Ivy Park, Rodarte, and Pat McGrath Labs.
Deacon is currently studying music at New York University and released his debut album "A New Earth" in April 2023. Additionally, he is following in his parents' footsteps by pursuing a career in acting, having made his debut as an actor in the Netflix series "Never Have I Ever" in 2022.
"The Lincoln Lawyer" actor stated that he and Witherspoon had set "good examples" for Ava and Deacon.
"He explained that they have witnessed how their mother and he have handled situations, how they have treated others, and how they have remained true to themselves, yet they have not allowed it to negatively impact them intensely. He added that they have not made it the ultimate purpose of their lives."
Phillippe stated, "Hollywood and entertainment are not the only aspects of life. I believe in working to live, not living to work. My identity is not tied to this industry. While I am passionate about it, there are numerous other things that enrich my experiences and capture my attention."
Ryan Phillippe claims that he and his ex-wife Reese Witherspoon have a simple co-parenting arrangement.
"In the end, your goal is for your children to be content, authentic, and confident. This doesn't mean being arrogant or boastful, but rather knowing their identity and staying true to it without any hesitation."
"As I get older, the judgment of others holds less significance to me. Everyone is trying to navigate their own path, and I believe that reinforcing those ideas is part of the process."
In 1997, Phillippe and Witherspoon met at a birthday party and started dating. They got engaged in 1998. In 1999, they co-starred in "Cruel Intentions" with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
This year, "Cruel Intentions" celebrated its 25th anniversary. In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Phillippe stated that the film "remains relevant" even after being released 25 years ago.
""Roger Kumble, the director, was a hilarious human being who brought out the fun we were all having while playing our parts and characters. Despite its controversy, the show still remains funny," he said."
"Although it's an unusual term, he said, 'That character was delightful to portray.' It was unlike him, as he's a reserved, contemplative individual. He found it enjoyable to embody someone who was outgoing, strategic, and carefree."
"Making it was enjoyable, and it was thrilling to be 23, 22, 23 years old and working on such material," he said with a chuckle. "It was a unique experience."
Reflecting on his acting career, Phillippe remembered that he had "specific aspirations" at the beginning.
He stated that one of his goals was to create a seminal teen movie, while another was to make a war film to honor his grandfathers. He added, "You know, those kinds of things." He expressed excitement about getting to do some of these projects, stating that they still hold up and are still watched by people today. Specifically, he mentioned "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Cruel Intentions" as examples of movies that continue to be popular.
"Phillippe mentioned that he starred in the 2006 war drama "Flags of Our Fathers," which paid tribute to his grandfathers who fought in World War II, alongside Clint Eastwood and Steven Spielberg."
""I got to help Robert Altman get a movie financed. I worked with both Scott brothers, Ridley and Tony. It's been a fun run. I've been pretty lucky," Phillippe continued."
"Prey" is in theaters and on demand now.
