Rory Sykes, a former child star, passed away at the age of 32 due to the California fires.
The death toll from the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County reached 16 on Sunday, according to the coroner's office.
On January 8, 2020, Rory Callum Sykes, a former child actor, tragically passed away at the age of 32 due to the Palisades Fire, as confirmed by his mother, Shelley Sykes.
Rory, an Australian actor who was born blind and with cerebral palsy, starred on the British television show "Kiddy Kapers." He also served as a motivational speaker and helped form the Happy Charity organization with his mom.
When the Palisades Fire started, Sykes tried to evacuate their Malibu home but encountered challenges in contacting emergency services due to limited resources, including power.
Australia's 10 News First reported that Sykes stated, "He was my baby, and he died needlessly."
The Palisades Fire prevented Sykes from communicating with the outside world while her son resided in a guest house on the family's 17-acre Malibu canyon property.
"The phone lines were down, and she couldn't leave her kid because he said, 'Mom, leave me,' and she had a broken arm and couldn't lift him. She couldn't move him."
She drove to her local fire station for help, but was told they had "no water."
"Sykes remembered saying, "Oh my God, my son is locked in his room," before the fire department rescued him. Unfortunately, when they returned, his cottage had been completely burned down."
As a child, Sykes, who was born in Britain, relocated to Australia. He later wrote a book titled "Callum's Cure," which chronicled his unwavering resolve to not only walk one day but also see.
"Sykes stated that she was informed by firefighters that her baby died from carbon monoxide poisoning instead of burning. She did not want her baby to experience any pain."
Sykes is considering filing a class action lawsuit but is currently holding off on taking any action.
""Rory and I will make the place even more beautiful, and it will always be special to us," Sykes stated."
Since Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Palisades Fire has burned 23,713 acres and is now 11% contained, resulting in five reported fatalities. The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection made this announcement on Sunday.
The Eaton Fire, which began on Jan. 7 in Altadena, has burned 14,117 acres and is currently 27%. Eleven fatalities have been confirmed.
