Richard Gere reveals that the iconic scene in "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts was improvised.
At the Venice Film Festival, Richard Gere discussed his iconic 1990 film.
Richard Gere, the star of "Pretty Woman," revealed that a crucial element of the film was improvised, according to him.
At the Venice Film Festival, during a Cartier masterclass event on Sunday, Gere disclosed that the "sexy" scene between him and Julia Roberts in the movie was not originally intended to be included.
In the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Vivan Ward discovers Edward Lewis playing the piano, a moment that was not planned.
Gere and Roberts share a passionate, intimate moment on top of the piano.
According to Variety, he said, "We were unsure of how we would utilize it in the future, but it ultimately became a crucial element in the film."
"Gere joked that the scene lacked chemistry, as he and his co-star had no romantic connection. He found it unusual and hadn't seen anything like it in a while. The scene was sensual and erotic."
The actor, now 75 years old, portrays an affluent businessman who falls in love with a prostitute (Roberts) in the movie. Gere stated that he played a character who was "almost criminally underwritten" and was merely a suit and a good haircut.
Edward's mysterious yearning and possibly damaged quality was revealed to Vivian through the piano scene, allowing her to view him in a completely different light.
He confessed that his chat with Garry Marshall, the film's director, served as the inspiration for it.
"According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gere said, "What do you do at late at night in a hotel?" Gere recalled. "And I said, 'Well, I'm usually jet-lagged, [that] would be the time I'm in a hotel. So I'm up all night and usually there's a ballroom somewhere or a bar, and I'll find a piano, and I'll play the piano.' He said: 'Well, let's do something with that. So we just basically improvised this scene, and he said, 'Play something moody.' I just started playing something moody that was this character's interior life.""
The scene where Gere presents Roberts with a necklace was also improvised, as revealed by Marshall in an interview with the American Film Institute.
"Some of the bits in 'Pretty Woman' were improvs and pranks for the gag reel," he explained. "I shot a piece - it ended up in the movie where Roberts was dozing off a little bit because she was 21 years old. We did a jewelry scene where she got a beautiful necklace. I said, 'Richard, hit her with the box! Bang the box on her finger.' And Roberts laughed so honestly that we left it in the picture."
