Richard Gere almost declined the part in the renowned movie "Pretty Woman."
In the romantic comedy, Julia Roberts' co-star, Gere, aged 75, revealed why he initially did not feel a connection to the script.
Initially, Gere confessed that he "did not comprehend" his character as the sophisticated and affluent businessman Edward Lewis.
"Gere stated on "The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter" podcast that there was no character in the script he read, and he immediately knew it wasn't suitable for him."
At the time, Gere viewed his "Pretty Woman" role as merely a costume.
Garry Marshall's decision to exclude "The Agency" actor from the movie made him "uncomfortable" during their meeting.
However, he switched gears after their meeting.
He began to explain, saying, "I said, 'Look, I just don't see a character.'"
Gere initially rejected the role, but Marshall persuaded him, saying, "Let's find it together," according to Gere.
Gere met with Roberts, who was already cast as Vivian Ward in "Pretty Woman," to give his impression of her.
Richard Gere did not seek a role in the new spy thriller "The Agency."
Gere said, "I said, 'She's adorable. She's great.' While I was talking to him, she took a Post-It off my desk and wrote something on it. Then she moved it across the table to me, and it said, 'Please say yes.' How could you say no to that?"
He stated, "We ultimately struggled to locate a character that fit seamlessly within the framework and the core of that work."
"We all loved each other, making it heartfelt, charming, fun, and sexy. We had great trust and a wonderful time, unaware of what it would become."
Since its release in 1990, the classic film has been cherished by its fans. Roberts received her second Academy Award nomination for her portrayal of Vivian. Gere and Roberts reprised their roles together in the 1999 film "Runaway Bride."
For years, Gere has treasured his role in "Pretty Woman."
