Renowned British actress Joan Plowright, who was married to Laurence Olivier, has passed away at the age of 95.
In 2004, Queen Elizabeth II bestowed the title of dame upon Plowright.
Joan Plowright, a renowned British actress and the late husband Laurence Olivier's widow, has passed away at the age of 95.
Plowright's family announced that she had a successful career spanning theatre, film, and TV for over seven decades until blindness forced her retirement.
At Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors in southern England, the Tony Award-winning actress passed away on Thursday, with her loved ones by her side.
"We are incredibly proud of Joan for being a loving and deeply inclusive human being."
Plowright, a remarkable British actor, won a Tony Award, two Golden Globes, and was nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy. In 2004, she was honored with a damehood from Queen Elizabeth II.
Olivier and Plowright left a lasting impression on the U.K.'s theater industry following World War II.
Joan Ann Plowright, a British actress, began her acting career at the age of 3 when her mother ran a drama group. She was born in Brigg, Lincolnshire, England.
During school holidays, Plowright attended summer sessions at university drama schools. Following high school, she studied at the Laban Art of Movement Studio in Manchester and later received a two-year scholarship to the drama school at the Old Vic Theatre in London.
In 1954, she made her London stage debut and later joined the Royal Court Theatre in 1956. Plowright gained recognition for her work in dramas written by John Osborne and collaborated with notable actors such as Albert Finney, Alan Bates, and Anthony Hopkins.
In 1956, John Huston's "Moby Dick" adaptation starring Gregory Peck marked Plowright's first film role, an uncredited appearance.
A year after her debut in "The Entertainer," she co-starred with her future husband Olivier in the original London production of the play. She portrayed Olivier's daughter in the production, and the two reunited for the 1960 film adaptation.
In 1961, both Plowright and Olivier got married in Connecticut while they were starring on Broadway in "Becket" and "A Taste of Honey," respectively.
When I think of or write to you, I experience a tranquility that fills me with a tender and peaceful feeling. This feeling is free from any violence, intensity, or deep longing. It makes me smile and feel content in my heart, so much so that I go out into the street with a smile on my face.
At the age of 82, Olivier died in 1989. Following his death, Plowright experienced a resurgence in his acting career at the age of 60.
In 1993, Plowright was one of the few actors to win two Golden Globes in the same year, receiving the supporting actress TV award for "Stalin" and the supporting actress movie award for "Enchanted April."
She has numerous film credits and starred in "Dennis the Menace," "The Spiderwick Chronicles," and "The Scarlet Letter."
Tamsin, Richard, and Julie-Kate, who are all actors, along with several grandchildren, are the survivors of Plowright.
