'Real Housewives' star shares details of her 'deadly' infection with a '10 to 20 percent survival' rate.
Vicki Gunvalson, a Bravo star, is still recovering from her illness after being hospitalized.
Vicki Gunvalson, a star on "The Real Housewives of Orange County," is still recovering from a life-threatening illness.
Michael Smith joined Gunvalson on "My Friend, My Soulmate, My Podcast" to provide additional information.
She stated that she had been driving and carrying on with her usual routine, but there appeared to be approximately an hour or two that she was absent and she couldn't recall where she was. Following that, she started speaking and writing incoherently when she arrived at her workplace.
Olivia, Smith's daughter, was alerted by a retired ER doctor that Gunvalson, the reality star, might be experiencing a stroke during a meeting with a client.
Olivia's mother, Gunvalson, was in tears and said, "From that point on, I don't remember much." She was initially misdiagnosed with a sinus infection and discharged home with Olivia, who contacted her father to come home and be with her.
Smith discovered that Gunvalson had set up a bath for herself and was unconscious when he arrived home after his daughter called him. After removing her from the bath and putting her to bed, doctors informed them that she only needed rest, and she slept for nearly 14 hours.
He awoke her, questioned her, but she answered slowly, so he returned her to the hospital.
"There was a litany of things that could have happened or gone wrong, and it didn’t so, thank you, Jesus." — Vicki Gunvalson
"He explained that she had a massive infection, which was actually sepsis but was mistaken for pneumonia. When the body fights a big and dangerous infection, it attacks everything, including the brain, due to the whole body's efforts to fight it."
Gunvalson stated that a member of her medical team informed her that she had a "10 to 20 percent survival rate" and was told that the sepsis that affected her body was deadly, but she had survived it. As a result, she would be okay, although it would take some time to recover.
"A multitude of potential outcomes could have occurred or resulted in failure, but they didn't, so thank you, Jesus," she stated, also expressing gratitude to Smith. He acknowledged Olivia's swift actions in getting her to the hospital, which he attributed to her quick thinking.
"Gunvalson stated that she has difficulty recalling information and that this is a result of brain trauma. She was informed that this condition is similar to a stroke or PTSD, and the brain enters a "quiet mode" that prevents it from remembering to safeguard the individual."
Smith has been an excellent nurse, and Gunvalson is improving after being put on antibiotics and steroids.
As they recounted her health scare, he became emotional, admitting, "I tried to remain stoic, but it was a terrifying experience for a while."
"She's coming out of it and will be fine," he added.
Gunvalson remained emotional, stating, "I frequently cry, and Michael frequently asks, 'Why do you cry so much?' I don't have a response."
