Randy Travis and his wife, Mary, remain amazed by the AI technology that enabled him to sing once more.

Mary told Planet Chronicle Digital on the ACM red carpet that when she first heard it, she couldn't hear much because she was crying so hard.

Randy's expression changed from intense listening to a pensive emotion, then to a smile and finally to all-out laughter as she watched him. She felt an overwhelming emotion hearing his voice and a new song, as he had heard his own voice so many times with the old songs, but this one was a brand-new one.

In 2013, Travis had a major stroke following his hospitalization for viral cardiomyopathy resulting from a respiratory infection.

Travis's stroke resulted in aphasia, which impaired his ability to communicate through speech and singing. Mary often takes on the role of interpreter, explaining to "CBS Sunday Morning" that Travis knows what he wants to express but struggles to articulate it.

A new song, "Where That Came From," features Travis' voice, which has been recreated using advanced AI models.

Randy Travis and his wife Mary describe AI as "magical" for restoring his voice.

""Randy was given the ability to create music again, which he loved the most in the world. If people could imagine losing their greatest passion, what would they hope for? For 11 years, our hope and prayer was to make music again," Mary said, with her arm around her husband's shoulder."

Travis agreed as she continued, "Now that he can, it's been magical. We call it 'artistic intelligence' because watching him and Kyle Lehning work together to create a song from 42 stems of his, with James Dupree laying down the vocals, was truly amazing."

"We hope that AI will be used for good and not misused or stolen from artists," Mary stated.

Travis’ new song was announced this month.

"I never thought I would be able to have a hand in music production, but with God's grace and the support of family, friends, fellow artists, and fans, I'm now able to create the music I love. Working with Kyle Lehning and Warner Music Nashville again has been special and nostalgic, and I'm excited to share my new song 'Where That Came From' with you today. Many thanks to my wonderful team and the best fans in the world for putting me back in the saddle again! I've enjoyed every moment of it."

The singer's appearance on the ACM red carpet was a rare public outing.

Travis and Mary visited the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, and Travis described the experience as "good."

"Being at the ACMs in my hometown is great because I was raised here and we still live here. It's nice that it's close to home, but the energy and great people here make it even better that we get to be a part of it."

Over the years, Travis has won 11 awards at the award show, including two top male vocalist accolades.
