Prince William had a heated phone conversation with Kate Middleton, shouting "I'm free!" at a London nightclub, according to an author.
In 2011, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got married.
Prince William and Kate Middleton are viewed as an ideal couple by many, but they have faced challenges to reach their current status.
According to royal author and journalist Robert Jobson, William and Kate had a phone call where William broke up with her. Afterward, William went to a London club with friends to celebrate. Jobson stated that a drunk William told the bar patrons he was "free," but it didn't take long for Kate to win him back.
In "Catherine, the Princess of Wales," by Jobson, it is revealed that William canceled plans to attend a New Year gathering in Dundee, organized by the Middletons, after several years of dating in 2007.
"Jobson stated that he sensed something was wrong with Kate, which was exacerbated by newspapers confidently predicting a royal engagement. Shortly after, without warning, William, now a 2nd Lieutenant in the Blues and Royals, called to suggest they split up."
Though it wasn't the first time William had called time on their relationship, it felt final. — Robert Jobson
"In a 30-minute conversation, they admitted they were on different pages and he couldn't guarantee marriage. He suggested they both needed space to find their own way."
Catherine was devastated by the breakup, feeling doubly let down after being dumped over the phone. Although William had ended their relationship before, this time it felt final.
William reportedly celebrated their break-up with an alcohol-fueled night at the Mahiki nightclub in Mayfair with his close friends.
""He shouted, 'I'm free!' as he danced drunkenly, and then urged his friends to 'drink the menu,' which they did," Jobson stated."
Despite the split, Kate remained upbeat and continued living her life. Paparazzi attention followed her everywhere, but she didn't let it dampen her spirits. Photos circulated of her enjoying the London nightlife on her own, and William, who was away in the Army, couldn't help but notice. He began to have doubts about their relationship.
A few months after their initial meeting, William and Kate were separately invited to a costume party with a "Freakin Naughty" theme by a mutual friend.
"Jobson wrote that she had arrived dressed as a nurse and William had immediately sought her out. They spent the first part of the evening talking intently before hitting the dance floor and eventually kissing. When friends joked they should go to a hotel, they left together."
A representative from Kensington Palace, responsible for managing the Prince and Princess of Wales and Buckingham Palace, did not respond promptly to Planet Chronicle Digital's inquiries.

In their 2010 engagement interview with ITV, William revealed that the couple had discussed their breakup. He explained, "We were both very young and were still figuring out who we were as individuals. We were different characters and were trying to find our own way, which contributed to our growing apart."
He stated, "It was just a bit of space and things, and it turned out well."
Kate admitted that although she wasn't thrilled with it initially, it helped her become a more resilient individual.
She shared that she discovered things about herself that she hadn't previously realized, and that relationships can be all-consuming when one is young. Despite not realizing it at the time, she valued that period in her life.
