One singer was moved to tears during a reunion lunch with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel: "I was a fool."
Simon previously stated that he and his collaborator on "Sounds of Silence" do not communicate.
The contentious relationship between Simon & Garfunkel may have slightly improved, possibly paving the way for a reunion.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Art Garfunkel disclosed that he and Paul Simon had an open and honest conversation about their strained relationship during a recent lunch.
Garfunkel revealed that he recently had lunch with Paul after a long absence, marking their first reunion in many years.
"When I saw Paul, I asked, "What happened? Why haven't we seen each other?" He reminded me of an old interview where I made some hurtful comments. I broke down in tears when he shared how much I had hurt him."
Simon & Garfunkel's image as nice guys was something I wanted to challenge, but now I realize I was mistaken.
Before achieving fame with "The Sound of Silence" in 1965, the duo had been friends for many years.
However, their creative partnership was a rocky one.
"I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?’… I cried when he told me how much I had hurt him." — Art Garfunkel
"Simon revealed in his "In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon" documentary that their partnership was uneven because he was responsible for writing all the songs and running the sessions. Artie would be in the control room, providing feedback but it was an uneven distribution of power."
In 1970, Simon & Garfunkel released their hit album "Bridge Over Troubled Water," but they parted ways soon after. A decade later, they reunited for a concert in Central Park, but their attempts to work together again fell apart due to the same issues that had caused their earlier breakup, and they split for good.
In 2014, Garfunkel stated to Rolling Stone that he believed he and Simon would tour again, saying, "I know that audiences all over the world like Simon and Garfunkel. I'm with them. But I don't think Paul Simon's with them."
A year after, he spoke to The Telegraph, expressing his disbelief, "How could you leave this fortunate location at the top of the world, Paul? What's wrong with you, fool? How could you let that happen, jerk?"
In 2016, Simon told Rolling Stone that there was no chance of a reunion and that they didn't even communicate.
If not their professional career, Garfunkel believes they could at least maintain their friendship.
The 83-year-old said, "We've made plans to meet again. Will Paul bring his guitar? Who knows."
"I wanted to make amends before it was too late, and it felt like we were back in a wonderful place. Now, as I reflect on it, tears are streaming down my face and I can still feel his hug."
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from Simon's representatives.
Art Jr., Garfunkel's son, shared with The Sunday Times that he and his father are collaborating on a new album. Despite their past disagreements, after their recent meeting, Garfunkel expressed his happiness and referred to Art Jr. as his brother and family.
Perhaps a big TV/charity event could bring them together musically, with some encouragement from their peers in the music industry, leading to new material and a new generation discovering their music.
Garfunkel, younger, mirrored his father's path and frequently toured with his parents and younger sibling.
"As I think about it now, tears are rolling down my cheeks. I can still feel his hug." — Art Garfunkel
Recalling the experience of being on stage at a reunion show featuring Dad and Paul Simon in front of the Colosseum in Rome in 2004, he said, "I stood on the stage and looked out at this sea of people. Over 600,000 people dancing and singing along, I felt the energy pulsating through my body. The power of the music left me speechless."
"After I asked, 'Dad, do you know everyone in the world?', he replied, 'No, not everyone. Only about half the world knows me.'"
I was surprised to learn about Paul and Dad's achievements, as my dad is a humble person who doesn't brag about his past or rock 'n' roll stories. He's always hesitant to talk about himself, so I had to extract the information from him.
