Nicole Kidman confesses that she sounds "crazy" for the methods she used to lose weight for a role.
The upcoming film 'Babygirl' features an Australian actress, who is 57 years old.
Nicole Kidman consistently goes above and beyond to prepare for her roles.
In the "Actors on Actors" issue of Variety, Kidman and Zendaya talk about the impact of certain roles on their physical and emotional well-being and the measures they take to shed the weight of their characters.
"The actress, 28, explained to Kidman, who stars in the upcoming erotic thriller "Babygirl," that going through all those emotions is really taxing and her body doesn't know that it's fake."
"No, that's putting yourself through trauma," Kidman said. "On 'Babygirl,' there were parts that were not included in the film that were emotionally distressing. The same was true for 'Big Little Lies.' It was physically and mentally exhausting because I couldn't differentiate between what was real and what wasn't. I would have real bruises all over my back and body."
Zendaya, who starred in "Challengers" and "Dune: Part Two" this year, said she still has her "Euphoria" scars.
I would think, 'Wait, you're injured.' So, I've done things like cleanse my chakras, pray, and use sage to heal. Honestly, I'll take whatever I need to move forward without being scarred or damaged. It may sound crazy, but it's not.
"A massage can bring a sudden feeling of healing, and we all need to prioritize our own well-being. I struggle with the idea of sacrificing my body for my art, but I'm learning to value myself more. You seem to have a strong sense of stability."
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kidman discussed her new "raw and dangerous" role in the film and explained why it's empowering to be viewed as a "sexual being" at 57.
Women are often dismissed as sexual beings during their career. It was refreshing to see Romy, a powerful CEO and mother, engage in a hot affair with her younger intern, Samuel, in the film.
As soon as I read it, I thought, "This is a unique voice, a new location, and I believe audiences haven't experienced it before." My character is now at a point where she possesses a great deal of power, but she is unsure of her identity, goals, and desires, despite appearing to have it all. I believe this is something many people can relate to.
Nicole Kidman believes the film is liberating and hopes it will inspire viewers to question their identities and desires. Some viewers have found it disturbing, which Kidman apologizes for.
"When I read it, I was struck by how different it was from any film I had seen before. I thought it was incredibly sexy," she later said. "It was so raw and dangerous, and I couldn't believe we were being given the money to make it. The sexuality of it felt dangerous. It wasn't written for a 20-year-old, let alone a 30-year-old."
Six 2024 projects have kept Kidman busy this year, including starring in Netflix's "The Perfect Couple," the Paramount+ series "Lioness," and more.
"My family is an integral part of my work, and my musician husband Keith Urban shares that nomadic mindset as well. We instill in our girls the idea that they are global citizens who should explore the world and gain new experiences. Traveling and experiencing different cultures is a valuable education."
"Babygirl" opens in theaters Dec. 25.
