'Nicole Curtis of 'Rehab Addict' laments the time she spent prioritizing her career over family.'
After founding her own production company, Curtis, a mother to sons Ethan and Harper, is returning to television.
Since gaining fame through her HGTV show "Rehab Addict," Nicole Curtis has pondered how her priorities have evolved.
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Curtis, who has recently started her own production company and is making a television comeback, gave advice to her younger self.
"Your children can't wait, but the best advice is for them to all wait," said Curtis, who shares youngest son Harper, 9, with Shane Maguire. She welcomed her first child, son Ethan 26, with her ex Steven Cimini in 1997.
As we began filming the show, my son was in sixth grade. Unlike many influencers today, I wasn't seeking fame. Instead, I wanted to create a TV show that showcased my son's talents.
"Curtis shared that he wanted to provide his son with a comfortable life without having to witness his struggles. He worked as a house cleaner and a real estate agent, selling items on Craigslist."
Curtis revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that she prioritized the show at times, putting her family's financial stability first.
"She confessed that she was pursuing the money intensely in order to improve her life for her family. However, there were times when she questioned whether her decision to become a cleaner was better because she missed out on quality time with her family in the early years."
"Curtis declared, "I won't do that this time, no matter what it is. I won't let anything take away from my family. So I'd tell my younger self, you'll figure it out. You'll figure it out. And I did.""
"If I could get those years back, I would trade everything in a heartbeat." — Nicole Curtis
After a conversation with her late grandfather, Curtis's perspective on her pursuit of money shifted.
"One day, he told me, 'Nicky, once you have enough money to not need it, stop chasing it. It's not necessary. Why are you still chasing it?' That lesson has been invaluable for me," she recalled.
Curtis stated that he is not the wealthiest or most financially savvy person in the world, but he is doing well enough to be content with his current situation.
"She remembered the years where she wasn't okay. She could recall every house she had ever cleaned and had to do the floors on her hands and knees because she needed to pay the mortgage and put gas in her car. However, she vowed never to sacrifice again for a check, as she didn't need that much to survive."
"If I could get those years back, I would trade everything in a heartbeat."
Ethan, a frequent guest on "Rehab Addict," grew up on construction sites while Curtis was building her career, resulting in a "different kind of childhood."
In 2015, when Harper was welcomed by Curtis, she opted to keep her youngest away from the limelight.
In the premiere episode of "Rehab Addict Rescue," Ethan paid tribute to his mother by expressing his admiration for her.
Ethan acknowledged that he "absolutely" appreciated the effort she put in to achieve what she has.
Curtis revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that balancing her work and family life was a key factor in founding her own production company.
While producing her previous reality shows, the TV personality had collaborated with other production companies. Nevertheless, Curtis stated that she eventually felt overwhelmed and responsible for "carrying the entire load."
"As time went on, I found myself in a position where I was both the director and owner of my production company. I bought and designed the properties, hired the crews, and worked alongside them. However, sharing the space with another production company began to wear on me, causing me to question whether I wanted to continue in this line of work."
"Curtis explained that it would be like someone else taking credit for running his construction sites if they came into his sites and did the heavy lifting."
"I will take on all the responsibility and ensure that it functions correctly for my life and family."
Despite the challenges of establishing her own production company, Curtis gained valuable knowledge from her years of experience in television and her role in managing construction sites for her previous shows.
"Curtis stated that anyone who has worked on his crew or visited one of his sites knows that it is a construction site with a bit of TV. He emphasized that this is what they want to portray on TV because otherwise, it is not enjoyable. For Curtis, it is important to take control and ensure that this is achieved."
"To be honest, I sat and thought, 'If this doesn't work with me starting my own company and taking control, then I don't need TV.'"
After gaining recognition as a TV host, Curtis felt the need to prove herself as a producer to network executives.
"Because I am a well-known brand and entity, many people mistakenly believe that I can easily enter any network and pitch a new show," she stated.

"Curtis stated, "They viewed me as an on-air talent rather than a producer. It took three years for me to demonstrate my commitment and prove that I am more of a producer than talent. Honestly, I prefer being a producer as I don't enjoy being on camera.""
"I wouldn't have it any other way," she said. "I was offered many different solutions just to stay on TV, but I didn't want to do it. I wanted to be in control of my own destiny."
The businesswoman confessed that her TV comeback through her own production has been "ugly," stating that she has mostly self-funded her new episodes.
"Curtis remarked that producing television shows is an expensive process, which is why he humorously posts on social media that his failed attempts result in costly family home movies. However, he believes that the most challenging aspect for him is the intense physical exertion required."
When filming without knowing the destination, it's challenging. Like my properties, I don't finance anything. It's all cash money.
""I've struggled before, so I'm not surprised by this challenge," Curtis said."
"I was a budding house cleaner in the suburbs of Detroit, where I established my business. I built a small house cleaning company and invested all the money I earned into real estate. It was like a refresher course for me, reminding me of my past. The sensation of being on my properties and knowing that everything is entirely mine is indescribable. You cannot put a price on that feeling."
Curtis shared with Planet Chronicle Digital what her fans can expect from her upcoming self-produced episodes.
"I decided to take a risk and start a new production company," she said with a laugh. "I bought a house in a small city I've never been to or seen before, which was always on my bucket list."
Curtis, a real estate professional, spent his mornings, evenings, and nights searching for a tiny house in a small town. One day, he was in a bad mood and impulsively decided to buy the house he found. He went through with the purchase.
"I flew from Paris to New York to Salt Lake City, drove to the house, and felt like, "Well, here we are. We're just going to do this house." That's how I felt about those episodes. It's been one of those moments where I'm like, "I can't believe I did that. But damn, that was fun.""
