Nelly explains why she felt it was an honor to perform at Trump's inauguration.
On Monday, Jan. 20, President-elect Trump will take the oath of office.
Several musicians have faced criticism after accepting an invitation to perform at President-elect Trump's inauguration.
Nelly, who is scheduled to perform at the Liberty Ball on Monday, defended his decision to participate in the event.
The St. Louis native stated in a live conversation with Willie D that he is not performing for financial gain, but rather as an act of honor and respect for the office.
"It doesn't matter who is in office. Our men and women, our brothers and sisters who serve this country, must go to war and risk their lives for whoever is in power," the rapper, who was born on a military base, stated.
"If they are willing to risk their lives for whoever is in office, then I am confident in my ability to deliver for whoever is in office."
According to a source close to Nelly, the 50-year-old artist's aunts and uncles all served in the military to protect democracy and the right to vote. Although Nelly has stayed away from politics and wouldn't participate in campaigning, he considers his performance to be an honor.
Nelly defended Trump against accusations of white supremacy during a conversation with Willie D., stating that she would need evidence to support such claims.
"The rapper earlier stated that politics is no longer relevant to him since his preferred candidate has won the presidency. He considers himself the commander in chief of the best country in the world."
Regardless of who is in office, it is an honor for me to perform for the president of the United States. If President Biden had asked me to perform, I would have performed. If Vice President Kamala Harris had won and asked me to perform, I would have performed.
Carrie Underwood, who will perform "America the Beautiful" at the inauguration, has also faced backlash, despite releasing a statement ahead of any discourse, saying she chose to perform out of love for her country.
"I am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and be a part of this historic event," Underwood stated. "I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in unity and look towards the future."
Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lee Greenwood are among the artists expected to play for Trump at his inauguration. In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Greenwood defended Underwood against haters and urged them to keep their negative comments to themselves.
