Miley Cyrus refers to her twerking phase as a 'misstep,' jokingly mocks her former wild behavior.
At Disney's D23 event, Cyrus and Harrison Ford were moved to tears while being recognized for their accomplishments.
Miley Cyrus can laugh about her past.
The Disney Channel show "Hannah Montana" launched the pop star's career, but she broke free from her good girl image with her album "Bangerz" in 2013. In a speech last night, she joked that the wild period of her life was a "malfunction."
During the D23 event, hosted by Disney for its fans, a ceremony was held at the end of the weekend to name 14 new Disney Legends - individuals who have made a significant impact while working with the company.
Stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett and Kelly Ripa were honored.
Cyrus began her speech with an emotional start, stating, "I'm going to reveal a little Disney Legend secret. I'm the one who shares what you're not supposed to know. And what I want to say is that legends get scared too. I'm scared right now, but the difference is we do it anyway, and all of you can do that every single day. It's legendary to be afraid and do it anyway. There is no such thing as failure when you try."
She discussed her early years and her audition for "Hannah Montana" at Disney's Burbank office in 2005, where she joked about the rumor that they create all Disney kids there.
She continued the joke by stating, "I wasn't made in a lab, but if I were, there must have been a glitch in the system that caused me to malfunction between 2013 and '16."
She said "Sorry, Mickey!" as the audience laughed and applauded.
"In 2005, when Cyrus was 13, "Hannah Montana" premiered. The show's final episode aired in January 2011, and two years later, the singer began promoting her new album "Bangerz.""
"A little bit of everything has changed since that day, but at the same time, nothing has changed at all. I stand here still proud to have been Hannah Montana because she made Miley in so many ways." — Miley Cyrus
That year, she gave a memorable performance at the MTV Video Music Awards with Robin Thicke, which included dancing provocatively, rubbing against him, and touching herself.
Miley was proud of her role on "Hannah Montana," and she tearfully concluded her speech by saying that although a lot has changed since that day, she still stands proud of being Hannah Montana because she made Miley in so many ways.
During the ceremony, both the "Flowers" singer and Harrison Ford were named legends and became emotional during their speeches.
Before he started speaking, the actor broke into tears, and the audience cheered him on. He paused for a moment to compose himself, and then someone shouted "I love you." In response, the actor said, "I love you too."
"I appreciate the life you've given me," he said. "I cherish the individuals I've had the chance to work with. No one stays in this industry for long. We all work together, regardless of our roles and responsibilities."
He identified as an "assistant storyteller" and declared to the audience, "The narratives are about you, your experiences. Our shared humanity. And being part of that field is a privilege."
Ford spoke about Disney CEO Bob Iger, expressing his admiration and gratitude for the impact he has had on both the company and his own life. He referred to Iger as a "dear and trusted friend," his voice breaking on the last word.
I'm really delighted and a little bit embarrassed by this, but I'm so very grateful to be in the company of my fellow honorees.
