Matthew McConaughey rejected a $14.5M offer from Hollywood and moved back to Texas after being labeled "rom-com dude."
The McConaugheys, consisting of Matthew McConaughey and his spouse Camila Alves McConaughey, reside in Texas with their 3 offspring.
Matthew McConaughey, with his devilishly handsome looks and natural charm, was the epitome of a leading man in romantic comedies.
The Academy Award-winning actor, now 55, decided to leave his "rom-com dude" identity behind in Hollywood and move to his ranch in Texas, where he could be more selective about roles.
"Nick Kyrgios was told by the host of "Good Trouble" that the devil lies in the endless affirmatives, not the negatives."
"Saying 'no' is equally, if not more, important, especially when you have achieved some level of success and access. In fact, 'no' becomes more crucial than 'yes' because we can all see how our lives have been overloaded with 'yeses,' leading to poor grades and other negative consequences."
In five years, McConaughey appeared in "The Wedding Planner," "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," and "Failure to Launch," all alongside notable actresses.
"He was content with his role as the "rom-com dude" and the financial success it brought, but he realized he was simply going through the motions."
"Since I couldn't do what I wanted to do, I stopped doing what I was doing and moved down to the ranch in Texas," he shared.
"I agreed with my wife and declared, "I won't return to work unless I am presented with desired roles.""
"Not exercising my creative juices for two years took its toll," McConaughey admitted. "I found myself craving my favorite juice earlier in the day," he shared. "Fortunately, Camila got pregnant with our first child [Levi], giving me a purpose to look forward to. However, I still felt the pressure to work," he said. Today, the couple has three children together.
He quipped that "working in the garden and creating chimes wasn't sufficient."
Two years into his Hollywood impasse, McConaughey received an offer for an action-comedy film for $8 million. He declined the offer, but they came back with a $10 million offer. He declined again, but they offered $12 million. He declined again, but they came back with a $14.5 million offer. McConaughey read the script again and realized it was the same one offered for $8 million, but it was better. He saw himself in the film and accepted the offer.
McConaughey recalled thinking to himself, "This could be a successful role for me. I should consider coming back to it." However, he ultimately decided against it, which he believed was a rebellious move in Hollywood. This move sent a clear message: "I'm not bluffing." When someone is not bluffing, there is something alluring about them.
"I believe that's what led Hollywood to conclude, 'He's a fresh and innovative concept.'"
McConaughey would go on to excel in various projects, including "True Detective," "Mud," and "Dallas Buyers Club," earning him an Academy Award for best actor.
"When the offers arrived, I was eager and immediately took advantage of them. I worked tirelessly and enjoyed every moment of it."
On his IMDb profile, it is stated that McConaughey has two films currently in production, neither of which are romantic comedies.
