Luke Grimes of 'Yellowstone' reveals that they were all caught off guard by Kevin Costner's departure from the show.
The second half of 'Yellowstone' season five will be available on Paramount+ starting November 10th.
As the final episodes of "Yellowstone" approach, Luke Grimes reveals that the cast was unaware of Kevin Costner's departure from the show.
"Yellowstone" star Grimes revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital that the cast assumed they would end the show without John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner, but the unexpected outcome took them all by surprise.
Grimes stated that from the start, it was clear that the show's conclusion would not include Kevin.
"In season one, he was sick, and you believed he would pass away. After his departure, you wondered if the children had the strength to maintain the family legacy."
We were all unprepared for the unexpected event that happened, which none of us saw coming. However, we were all preparing for it at some point. It was exciting to experience the journey with the audience.
"It happened in a way that kind of I guess none of us, you know, saw it coming." — Luke Grimes
Grimes stated that he was "a little disappointed" that the "Yellowstone" cast was unaware that Costner wouldn't be back to finish the fifth season.
"He began by expressing his disappointment that we didn't know he wouldn't be back, stating that there might have been a better goodbye if we had done it differently. He added that it was more of a surprise than anything."
"As I mentioned earlier, that's beyond my responsibility. Our duty is simply to appear and execute the tasks assigned to us to the best of our abilities," Grimes stated.
In June, Costner expressed disappointment to People about how the rumors surrounding his exit were handled by production.
He said at the time, 'I loved the show. I liked the people on the show. I liked what it was about. I love that world.'
'Yellowstone' actor Luke Grimes reveals that the cast was not aware of Kevin Costner's departure from the show.
The show aired the first half of the fifth season late last year and took a break for the holidays. They were scheduled to resume filming at the beginning of the new year, but that was postponed until this summer.
The scripts were not available, and that's why Costner couldn't continue. He said, 'That show stopped for 14 months, and I wasn't aware of the hold-up that was going to happen.'
Before the announcement that Paramount Network was airing the final episodes of season five on November 10, Costner stated that he was aware of the online speculation surrounding his departure and was not satisfied with the lack of backing from production.
"He expressed disappointment that no one on their side had ever defended his actions, leading him to think, 'When will someone speak up about what I have done instead of what I haven't?'"
Although he was disappointed, Costner stated that he would still be interested in returning to tie up any remaining loose ends.
"He expressed in June that he had always believed it would be a fascinating opportunity to return and complete the mythology of this contemporary family, and if that occurred, he would join in if he concurred with how it was being executed."
He stated that in the end, he had done all he could for it.
The Dutton family's struggle to save their ranch in Montana is chronicled in "Yellowstone," featuring a star-studded cast including Costner, Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, and Wes Bentley.
Talks are ongoing for a sixth season of the Paramount show, despite the original plan to end after season five, according to Deadline.
According to sources, no deals have been reached in August, but it is likely that "Yellowstone" will continue with Hauser and Reilly as the leads. However, Costner will not be included in the second half of season five.
Luke Grimes, star of 'Yellowstone,' reveals that Kevin Costner's departure from the hit show was unexpected.
In August, Paramount declined to comment on the report that was reached out to by Planet Chronicle Digital.
Kelsey Asbille, who portrays Monica, Kayce Dutton's love interest in "Yellowstone," admitted to Planet Chronicle Digital that she has no information about a possible sixth season. "I'm sorry, but I can't answer that question," she said.
"Yellowstone" fans can anticipate some information from Asbille about the upcoming final episodes.
Asbille said, "It's a big season, and we come in hot on Sunday night. Luke [Grimes] said we're coming in at a ten, so I hope they love it. I'm sorry we kept you waiting, and I hope you love it as much as we do."
The last episodes of season five of "Yellowstone" will be released on Paramount+ on November 10th.
