Lisa Marie Presley's warnings about the showbiz industry were disregarded by Elvis Presley's granddaughter.
Lisa Marie Presley and Danny Keough advised Riley Keough against fame.
Riley Keough's journey to fame is unlike any other.
Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Daisy Jones and the Six actress, 35, is the daughter of singer Danny Keough and the late Lisa Marie Presley.
Keough revealed in a new Elle UK interview that despite her parents' attempts to dissuade her from pursuing her dream of becoming a performer, she ultimately succeeded.
"She remembered Lisa Marie's advice: "If you want to succeed, you must be highly skilled and respected in your field, otherwise, you won't be taken seriously and won't get any jobs, resulting in embarrassment.""
"I’m sure being Elvis’s granddaughter has made it easier for me to get an agent, to have meetings and all this stuff, when I started out." — Riley Keough
She deeply ingrained in me and my brother the idea that "You don’t want to be an embarrassing celebrity kid!"
Keough grew up with a younger brother, Benjamin, who tragically took his own life in 2020. She also has two little sisters, Harper and Finley, who were born to her fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, in 2008.
Keough has managed to avoid being a "celebrity kid" and has accumulated an impressive list of acting credits since her debut in "The Runaways" in 2010. However, she admitted that her famous family gave her a competitive advantage.
""Being Elvis's granddaughter has undoubtedly helped me secure an agent and attend meetings, but I'm aware of the privilege that comes with it and the criticism that comes with being a 'nepo-baby,'" she stated."
Although she has an advantage, she still worked hard.
At 14, Keough started her career as a model and made her debut in a Dolce and Gabbana show at Milan Fashion Week in 2004. Recently, she shared with Vanity Fair that her whole life had been public, but her participation in the show felt like the first time she was doing something alone, rather than as part of a family affair.
For several years, she continued modeling and participating in fashion shows, eventually gracing the covers of prestigious magazines such as Vogue and L'Officiel. Her first magazine cover was for People, featuring "Elvis' first grandchild" at just a month old.
She shifted her focus to acting, beginning her career with a starring role alongside Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in "The Runaways."
She appeared as a stripper in Channing Tatum's 2012 film "Magic Mike" and has also worked on critically-acclaimed indie projects, including 2016's "The Girlfriend Experience."
Besides her acting career, which has earned her over 40 credits in the past 14 years, she also owns a production company called Felix Culpa with her friend Gina Gammell.
Vogue reported that she was born with a strong work ethic, while Vanity Fair learned from her that she did not inherit it from her family.
I believe we are a combination of nature and nurture. As a child, I was naturally punctual, hardworking, and ambitious. However, my upbringing was quite different. It was a no-schedule environment where we would sometimes attend school and other times not. This was my norm, so I lived my teen and childhood years as if this was what I desired. Despite being adventurous and spontaneous, I thrive on routine. My parents said when I was young, I was always trying to organize things and make things happen.
In a limited series on Amazon last year, Keough starred as Daisy Jones in "Daisy Jones and the Six." Her performance in the musical drama about a fictional rock band was highly acclaimed, and Reese Witherspoon, who served as executive producer, concisely described Keough's distinctive experience.
""Although she has wealth and luxuries, Witherspoon said in Vanity Fair, that life is incredibly difficult. She admires Reese Witherspoon's ability to handle intense scrutiny and excel in her career, despite not needing to."
Keough's work in the entertainment industry has been influenced by her family's legacy, but she believes it's easier to be Elvis's granddaughter than it was for her mother to be his daughter.
Lisa Marie's career was hindered by being the daughter of a famous and iconic figure, as she struggled to separate her personal life from her public persona, ultimately leading to her death from a bowel obstruction caused by old bariatric surgery.
""Being Elvis's daughter was her entire identity, but she didn't enjoy the fame and attention that came with it," she stated."
Lisa Marie and Benjamin's deaths have made Keough the sole guardian of the Presley family legacy, alongside her grandmother, Priscilla.
Elvis' former home in Memphis, Tennessee, is now solely managed by her as the trustee of the Graceland estate. Additionally, she assisted in the completion of Lisa Marie's memoir, "From Here to the Great Unknown," which was recently published.
In the interview, Keough stated that the most heartbreaking thing for her, growing up, was to see her mother, who deeply desired love and friendship, struggle to find it. She believes this is a common issue for people at that level of fame. Being Elvis's daughter is different from being other people's daughters, she said. Although her mother had some great friendships and relationships, it was always a struggle for her.
