Legal expert: Jay-Z and Garth Brooks' defense of rape accusers is a "very risky" move.
Jay-Z and Sean 'Diddy' Combs are accused of raping a minor following the 2000 MTV VMAs.
An unnamed accuser made rape allegations against Jay-Z, prompting him to publicly declare that he would not be silenced.
On Sunday, Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Carter, was implicated in a sexual assault case brought by Sean "Diddy" Combs. The next day, he filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit, which accused him of raping a minor along with Diddy at an MTV VMAs after-party in 2000, according to court documents.
This year, Garth Brooks accused his former makeup artist of blackmail after being accused of raping her in 2019.
While speaking out against an accuser can be risky, it's also valuable to do so, according to Neama Rahmani, a former federal prosecutor and president of West Coast Trial Lawyers.
"When a defense attorney or publicist is overly aggressive and shames the victim, it can encourage other victims and witnesses to come forward. However, this can also have the opposite effect, scaring some people from coming forward. It can also help control the narratives and PR role in traditional and social media. While there may be some benefit, it can backfire and potentially encourage other victims who are hesitant to come forward. Being the first victim is often challenging."
On Monday, Jay-Z and his family attended the premiere of "Mufasa: The Lion King" in Los Angeles. Jay-Z voiced the role of Nala in the Disney film, while his daughter Blue Ivy played Kiara.
The lawsuit, originally filed in October, was refiled in New York on Sunday by an anonymous accuser who claimed Jay-Z "raped" her while Diddy and "Celebrity B" watched. Initially, the lawsuit stated that Diddy raped the minor while "Celebrity A" and "Celebrity B" watched. However, in the refiled lawsuit, Jay-Z was named as "Celebrity A."
Jay-Z rejected the accusations in a statement posted online via his Roc Nation brand, asserting that Buzbee's attempt to pressure him into a settlement only made him more determined to expose Buzbee as a fraud in a highly public manner. As a result, Jay-Z declared that he would not pay Buzbee a single cent.
Jay-Z was responded to by Buzbee in a statement on X, where he stated that his client never requested any payment.

In the Jay Z case, Mr. Carter previously denied being the one who sued me and my firm. However, he filed a frivolous case under a pseudonym. Despite his recent statement, what he failed to mention is that my firm sent his lawyer a demand letter on behalf of an alleged victim, and that victim never demanded any payment from him.
"She opted for a private mediation instead of a public lawsuit. Although I wrote the letter on her behalf, Mr. Carter has not only sued me but also tried to intimidate and harass me and this plaintiff. His behavior has had the opposite effect. She is now more confident. I am proud of her determination."
Eric Schiffer, a brand expert, believed that Jay-Z's response to the lawsuit aligned with his personal evolution from his surroundings.
If Jay-Z is innocent, as he claims, this is the best course of action, which involves taking a tough and aggressive stance with a fierce attorney who strongly believes in his clients' cases. Schiffer said that Jay-Z's approach in releasing his statement, which he presented low-key and like he wrote it on his computer, helps with authenticity by tying in his background, story, and view on how he won't be manipulated, just like when he was younger on the street and wouldn't get pushed around.
"Jay-Z’s approach in the way he released his statement, presented low-key – like he wrote it on his computer – helps with authenticity, including tying in his background, his story, his view of how he won't be manipulated, no different then when he was younger on the street and wouldn’t get pushed around." — Eric Schiffer
"We must wait for the facts to determine if this approach will help preserve the assumption that he is guilty."
For some fans, Jay-Z's statement denying the rape allegations strengthens and emphasizes his brand image as a self-made man who rose from the streets, sold drugs, and became a successful rapper and businessman.
In 2019, Garth Brooks was accused of raping his former makeup artist, "Jane Roe," during a work trip, according to court documents obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital. Roe also claimed that Brooks openly discussed sex in front of her, exposed his genitals, shared sexual fantasies with her, sent her explicit text messages, and physically groped her breasts.
"Our client's bravery in pursuing her complaint against Garth Brooks is commendable," said attorneys for "Jane Roe." "The filing of this complaint today highlights the existence of sexual predators in the country music industry, in addition to corporate America, Hollywood, rap and rock and roll."
Brooks, the "Friends in Low Places" singer, filed a countersuit against the woman who accused him of sexual misconduct, alleging that she attempted to extort him and defamed his character. In his countersuit, Brooks named the accuser and accused her of false light invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.
"He stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that for the past two months, he has been subjected to constant harassment through threats, falsehoods, and ominous predictions about his future if he failed to pay a large sum of money in the form of a check. The experience felt like having a gun pointed at him."
According to Tre Lovell, a Los Angeles entertainment and civil attorney from the Lovell Firm, it is crucial for Brooks and Jay-Z to defend themselves against their accusers.
"Lovell stated that while it is not risky to fight back in public, it is absolutely necessary to protect one's brand and image. He emphasized that the only way to restore one's public image is by taking their case to the public."
Lovell stated that taking strong action, such as making a powerful statement or filing a lawsuit, can help protect one's image and demonstrate that they have been wronged and are determined to fight back. This includes not only defending against lawsuits brought against them but also filing their own lawsuits for damages they have suffered as a result of being falsely accused.
