Keira Knightley described the iconic scene in 'Love Actually' as 'creepy'.
The cast of 'Love Actually' included Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Liam Neeson.
Perhaps, "Love" may not accurately depict one of Keira Knightley's most memorable movie moments.
In 2003, the young actress, who had already made a name for herself, joined the star-studded cast of "Love Actually," a romantic Christmas movie that has since become synonymous with the holiday season.
Although it was well-known, Knightley confesses that she has a hard time recalling specifics from her time filming.
I have only seen most of my films once or not at all. Therefore, it is not a criticism of "Love Actually." Rather, it is a testament to the film's success, as it did not perform as well as expected initially but has since gained popularity.
"The only film I've had that found life after it ended. However, I was only on it for five days, and I was 17 at the time, so I have no memory of it whatsoever."
The movie follows a group of characters whose lives intertwine through different love stories. Among them are Juliet and Peter, portrayed by Knightley and Ejiofor, respectively. Their wedding is captured on film by Peter's best man, Mark, who harbors a secret crush on Juliet.
Mark, holding a boombox playing "Silent Night," stands outside Juliet's door, cue cards in hand, to declare his love for her.
The scene, which was filmed many years ago, has lost its charm and now has an eerie feeling of inappropriateness. Knightley, who was present during filming, remembers feeling this strange vibe and discussing it with director Richard Curtis.
"Knightley recollected the slightly stalkerish aspect of filming, remembering Richard, a dear friend, who had pointed out that he was looking at Lincoln like he was creepy."
She added, "And then having to redo it to make him seem less creepy, I had to fix my face."
"There was a creep factor at the time, wasn't there?" Knightley, now 39, said. "I knew I was 17 then, and it only seems like a few years ago that everyone else realized I was 17," she said of her age during filming. Lincoln, whom her character Juliet runs after and kisses, was 29 at the time.
In a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair, Lincoln expressed similar concerns.
Richard kept reassuring me, "Don't worry, you won't come across as a creepy stalker."
In 2023, Richard admitted to The Independent that the scene was inherently strange.
"I find it a bit strange. I recall being caught off guard seven years ago when I was about to be interviewed and they said, 'Of course, we're mostly interested in the stalker scene,' and I asked, 'What scene is that?' Then I was educated on it," he said. "All I can say is that many intelligent people were involved in the film at the time, and we didn't think it was a stalker scene."
The film also featured Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, and Colin Firth.
