Kate Winslet faced off with a critic who shamed her weight in an emotional confrontation.
In 'Titanic', Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio were the lead actors.
Kate Winslet confronted a critic who made derogatory comments about her body.
Winslet, 49, remembered hearing "terrible" things about her body during the peak of her "Titanic" fame. During a "60 Minutes" interview, a red carpet moment was shown where a reporter remarked that Winslet "melted and flowed" into her dress and should have worn a larger size.
"Winslet exclaimed, "That was absolutely appalling! How could they do something like that to a young actress who's just trying to find her way?""
"I said, ‘I hope this haunts you.’ It was a great moment. It was a great moment, because it wasn’t just for me. It was for all those people who were subjected to that level of harassment." — Kate Winslet
Winslet admitted to confronting the critic "face-to-face" and "letting them have it."
"I said, 'I hope this haunts you,'" she said, getting emotional. After a moment she whispered, "It was a great moment."
It was a significant moment because it wasn't just about me. It was for everyone who experienced that level of harassment. It was horrific and truly terrible.
As a young actress, Winslet frequently faced comments about her weight. In one instance, her drama teacher advised her that she would have to accept roles as the "fat girl" in order to succeed in the industry.
In the interview, she remembered hearing the statement, "Listen, Kate. As you look like this, you'll have to accept the roles of the 'fat girl'."
"I was never even fat!" Winslet noted.
Winslet felt a "determination" to prove the teacher wrong in that moment.
""She quietly determined to show them, thinking, 'I'll just demonstrate,'" she explained."
Winslet's performance in "Heavenly Creatures" and "Sense and Sensibility" helped her land the role of Rose in "Titanic," which catapulted her to fame.
Winslet has earned six additional Academy Award nominations, including one for best supporting actress for her roles in "Iris" and "Steve Jobs."
Kate Winslet has been nominated for best actress for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Little Children," and won best actress for her performance in "The Reader."
