John Schneider and Dee Dee Sorvino felt guilty about their love after loss, but it's magic.
In July, the 'Dukes of Hazzard' alum and Paul Sorvino's widow got married.
John Schneider and Dee Dee Sorvino, who lost their spouses within the past two years, never expected to fall in love again. However, in a surprising turn of events, they found each other while grieving and got married in a surprise wedding in Las Vegas last month.
During their wedding celebration at the Hollywood Museum in Los Angeles on Aug. 1, the "Dukes of Hazzard" actor, 64, exclusively told Planet Chronicle Digital that he never thought he'd hold another hand or laugh again.
John's wife, Alicia Allain Schneider, passed away in 2023 at the age of 53 after a four-year battle with breast cancer. Meanwhile, Dee Dee's husband, actor Paul Sorvino, died in 2022 at the age of 83 after experiencing health issues.
"John described his first meeting with Dee Dee as "magic" and added, "There is something to be said about commiserating because we didn't expect it.""
"Dee Dee didn't anticipate being able to cry, as she tends to keep things bottled up and put on a tough exterior. However, when it happened, it was completely unexpected, unfamiliar, and a bit frightening."
The couple couldn't help but feel a sense of "guilt" while finding comfort in one another.
Dee Dee stated that since we lost our spouses and were content in those relationships, it's inevitable to feel guilt.
"I felt guilty and judgmental towards myself, but ultimately, laughter helped me overcome those feelings."
"Dee Dee added, "I didn't think I'd find love again, but this one comes along and changes everything. We laughed immediately, and I was further along than John, so I think he felt more guilt.""
John acknowledged that people often set a timeline and have expectations for how and when he should progress through his grief journey.
"Grief is a unique experience that cannot be put on a timeline, as people often try to do. Some individuals believe that one should move on quickly from grief, but this is not always the case. Grief is a complex emotion that does not disappear with time, and it is not the same as a divorce. People may pressure others to move on, but others may argue that it is too soon to do so."
"Finding someone who can help you through grief and then falling in love with that person while also helping them find a place to put their own grief is a magical experience."
"We love each other. And loving each other doesn't… diminish Paul or Alicia in any regard. In fact, I think in many respects, it actually keeps them closer." — John Schneider
Their late spouses brought them together, and as they navigate their individual losses while enjoying their newlywed bliss, they can agree on this one thing for sure.
"Paul pleaded with me to find love again after him, but I refused. However, I eventually did. Now, I feel like Paul led me to John, and I'm grateful for it."
John Schneider and Dee Dee Sorvino claim that their deceased spouses are responsible for bringing them together.
"John stated, "I believe Alicia and Paul are both responsible for our getting together, and I truly believe that. I need to believe that. So, I think Alicia is delighted because I'm a mess, and this is a fixer. She's funny, cute, and meticulous, and I'm a 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that needs to be put back together, and she's the one who can do it.""
The duo has given themselves ample time to complete the task.
"John said, "Having all my plans fall apart makes it difficult to believe in my worthiness to make new ones. But then I meet someone who makes me laugh and someone who makes me feel okay, and I realize that it's okay to want to live because I didn't. She knows that too.""
"If it weren't for her, if she hadn't come around, if that crazy dame over there hadn't come around... I wouldn't want to be here," he admitted. "There's a huge difference in finding someone who makes it okay to do this because they also hurt. We miss them, but we cling to each other. We love each other. And loving each other doesn't diminish Paul or Alicia in any way. In fact, I believe it brings them closer."
As they continue their journey together, John and Dee Dee vow to always appreciate and cherish each other and their shared moments.
"John stated, "We are a productive, fun couple who are always up for an adventure and success. As long as we're laughing, we're in. If you don't fit into that category, you're out.""
