John Lennon and Yoko Ono's reunion was 'sparked' by Elton John.
In the new documentary 'Elton John: Never Too Late,' the singer-songwriter shares details about his friendship with the late Beatle.
Elton John and John Lennon had a tumultuous friendship that culminated in helping Lennon and his partner, Yoko Ono, reconcile.
Elton John claims to have played a role in Lennon and Ono's reconciliation in the mid-1970s in his new documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late," now streaming on Disney+.
In 1973, the musicians first crossed paths on the set of a commercial shoot through a mutual friend, Tony King.
"The singer-songwriter, known for "Tiny Dancer," admitted to being both intimidated and excited, stating, "It felt like meeting someone I've known my entire life.""
John remembered their time together fondly, recalling, "We had a blast hanging out and laughing. We laughed so much, it's a wonder we didn't cry from laughing too hard. We did a lot of drugs, too."
He was a member of The Beatles, yet he remained passionate about making music and staying politically engaged. Despite his past accomplishments, he still found purpose in life and was someone I admired.
During a documentary, an old interview clip was shown where Lennon stated, "Elton and I share a strong bond."
The duo worked together on the 1974 song "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," with John initially providing background vocals before offering to add piano to the track, resulting in a duet.
The Grammy-winner said in the documentary, "Although I was very nervous, it was a dream come true for me. I could have died and gone to heaven."
John was confident that the song would become a chart-topper, but Lennon was skeptical, so they made a bet: If it did, Lennon would join John on stage to perform.
The Billboard Hot 100 chart's top song during the week of Nov. 16, 1974, was "Whatever Gets You Through the Night."
In less than two weeks, Lennon kept his bet and made a surprise appearance during John's Thanksgiving concert on Nov. 28 at Madison Square Garden.

John's team member remembered Ono contacting them and requesting to attend the concert, but stated that Lennon wouldn't be aware of her presence. They decided to conceal her presence and seated her 11 rows away, taking into account Lennon's poor eyesight, which would prevent him from spotting her in the crowd.
According to the documentary, Lennon received two gardenias backstage and said, "I bet they’re from Yoko," adding, "I couldn’t do it if I knew she was here."
In a 2020 interview with Howard Stern, John revealed that Lennon wore one of the flowers in his lapel on stage.
Lennon and Ono had been apart for nearly two years at that point.
In 1966, they first met and later married in 1969. However, they separated in 1973, after which Lennon went on a "Lost Weekend" in Los Angeles with the couple's assistant, May Pang.
"According to Elliot Mintz, a friend of Lennon and Ono, John went off the rails during that time period. He spent most of his time in L.A. under the influence of substances, staying up all night, and not producing much. When Mintz spoke with him, John sounded more depressed than happy."
Before the Madison Square Garden show, John remembered Lennon being terrified and physically sick.
Since The Beatles' concert at Shea Stadium in 1965, Lennon had not appeared at a major concert in New York.
When Lennon was brought out onstage during the concert, the audience greeted him with an overwhelming celebration.
"John exclaimed in the documentary, 'I've never heard a sound or roar like the reception I got,' and many of us cried, with tears streaming down our faces."
Lennon thanked John and the band after they played "Whatever Gets You Through the Night." He then informed the crowd that they would perform one more song so he could go be "sick" backstage.
Lennon announced to the audience that they would perform an old, estranged fiancé of his called Paul's number, which was an old Beatle song that they knew well. They then launched into "I Saw Her Standing There." Additionally, they played a cover of The Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," which John had recorded with Lennon and released as a single.
The show marked the final performance of Lennon, and also reunited the former Beatle and Ono.
"I believe I played a role in John and Yoko rekindling their relationship," John stated. "Had I not performed on 'Whatever Gets You Through the Night' and urged him to do the show, perhaps they would not have reunited."
Of course they reunited and had Sean.
In 1975, John Lennon and Yoko Ono renewed their vows and welcomed their son, Sean Ono Lennon, on October 9th, which was Lennon's 35th birthday.

Sean's godfather, John, remembered Lennon improving as a father.
The Oscar winner stated that he had fallen in love again. His wildness had subsided, and he had stopped taking drugs and acting recklessly, which was commendable. I was thrilled for him.
John mentioned that he overcame his struggles with drugs and alcohol in 1990, despite his craziness.
During a conversation between Sean and John on BBC 2 in 2020, Sean joked that he was "grateful" for Lennon and John's friendship "because it directly resulted in my birth."
Lennon and Ono were captured in a backstage photo from the concert, looking deeply in love, and John confirmed that they all went out for a post-show gathering.
John said, "The amazing thing was that, after you were born, I didn't hear or see your dad at all, and I didn't mind because he was so happy being back with your mom and so enchanted having you. His life had become another thing."
He continued, "The night that was so significant in his life, the fact that he reunited with your mother, and then they had you, and then, as a result, he asked me to be your godfather because it was a coincidence and fate."
John stated that Lennon's emphasis on fatherhood led to the shortening of their friendship, as he spoke sternly about the matter.
"I was probably the catalyst in Yoko and John getting back together." — Elton John
John stated that he considered their friendship wonderful, despite the fact that he got back together with Yoko and had Sean, and they no longer hung out together for two years.
"Of course, the tragedy occurred, and I never truly expressed my love for him," he said. "Do you think people often regret not saying something? In those circumstances, where he passed away, it's impossible to go back and say what you wish you had said."
On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was assassinated, causing ripples of disbelief and grief globally.
John remembered learning of Lennon's death while flying from Brisbane to Melbourne in Australia. He said they were instructed to remain on the plane upon landing, and at first, he believed his grandmother had passed away.
"When we learned about John, none of us could believe it," he said during the conversation on BBC. "The death of your father affected us all greatly. We couldn't believe it. There were no health issues; it was a sudden and brutal murder."
John and Bernie Taupin, his songwriting partner, later wrote a song dedicated to Lennon titled "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)." Sean revealed that the song held great significance for him and was an integral part of his "mourning process."
John conveyed to his son that Lennon had a significant impact, stating, "While he may have departed, during his time here, he accomplished so much good and inspired countless individuals. His unique personality and character traits are rare to find today. I wish he were still with us, as I'm sure you and everyone else do."
