Joaquin Phoenix, who starred in 'Joker: Folie a Deux,' reveals that losing weight for the sequel was both safe and complex.
Lady Gaga's weight loss in "Joker" impressed Joaquin Phoenix.
Joaquin Phoenix reveals that staying fit for the "Joker" sequel was a challenging task for him as an actor in Hollywood.
In a press conference for "Joker: Folie à Deux," Phoenix discussed his challenging experience maintaining his controversial diet.
Phoenix stated at the Venice Film Festival, as reported by Variety, that she wouldn't discuss the diet specifics because she believed nobody wanted to hear it. However, this time, it felt more complicated due to the extensive dance rehearsals, which were not present in the previous occasion.
"Although it was more challenging, it's still safe. You're right, at 49, I shouldn't do this again. This might be the end for me."
In 2019, Phoenix disclosed that he had lost over 50 pounds for the role of Arthur Fleck in the DC comic film.
"I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is probably it for me." — Joaquin Phoenix
He commended Lady Gaga, born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, for her transformation in the film.
"When I first met you in rehearsals, you were overweight. But when you returned, you had lost a significant amount of weight, which was truly impressive."
The pop star stated, "We gradually became our characters and refined every aspect of our portrayal."
Phoenix explained why it was difficult to discuss his transformation, although he couldn't recall the exact amount of weight he lost for the sequel.
"Although I was responsible for discussing it last time, it's challenging to do so because it becomes an obsession, as you're constantly working to achieve a specific weight," Phoenix stated.
"As a result, you end up discussing it, and it sounds like an actor boasting about their weight loss. After that performance, I felt disgusted with myself and furious at myself for making a big fuss about that aspect, as you simply do what you're supposed to do. This time, I decided not to do it."
The actor then quipped about how much weight he lost.
"I don't know, I was only joking. It was 47 pounds."
In 2019, Joaquin Phoenix revealed how he underwent a complete physical transformation to portray the Joker in Todd Phillips' film.
During an interview with Access Hollywood, he joked that it wasn't just an apple a day, but also lettuce and steamed green beans.
The actor, who won a Golden Globe, stated that he took care to lose weight in a controlled manner.
He explained that he had done it before, and working with a regimented and overseen doctor in a safe environment was the process.
Director Phillips didn't make Phoenix's extremely strict diet any easier.
"Todd had bags of pretzels in his office that I loved, but it was difficult."
