Jim Carrey announces his return from retirement due to financial necessity.
In 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3," Jim Carrey returns to acting after announcing his retirement in 2022.
Jim Carrey initially stated that he would only return to acting if he received a script written in gold ink. However, two years later, he is back making movies due to financial necessity.
In 2022, Carrey declared that he was taking a hiatus from acting and disclosed the sole factor that could entice him to return.
""I'm probably retiring, but it's not set in stone. I'm being serious, but it depends on what the angels tell me. If they give me a gold ink script that's important for people to see, I might continue. But for now, I'm taking a break," Carrey said to Access Hollywood."
He continued, "I truly enjoy my peaceful existence, painting on canvas, and my spiritual journey. I feel content and fulfilled, as if I have accomplished enough and am enough."
Dr. Robotnik, portrayed by Carrey, is returning to the big screen in "Sonic the Hedgehog 3," set for release on Dec. 20.
"I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly." — Jim Carrey
At the film's premiere in London on Dec. 10, AP Entertainment asked about Carrey's previous statement on retirement.
The outlet reported that the star had stated in a previous interview that they would return if a script written in gold ink by angels was provided.
"Carrey replied, "That might have been hyperbole, yeah," while laughing. "I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.""
After stepping away from the media, Carrey embarked on a promotional tour for the second "Sonic" film.
In March 2022, Will Smith received a standing ovation at the 94th Academy Awards for best actor, despite smacking Chris Rock on the worldwide center stage.
The "Liar Liar" performer, Carrey, was sickened by the standing ovation at the Oscars and shared this on "CBS Mornings" with Gayle King. King emphasized that Carrey's appearance on "Morning" was scheduled before the viral moment.
Carrey stated, "I felt like Hollywood is spineless en masse, and it really felt like, 'Oh, this is a clear indication that we're not the cool club anymore.'"
Smith was crying while receiving an award for playing Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena, in "King Richard." Carrey argued that Smith should have been removed from the venue for his behavior.
King questioned Carrey about Rock's decision not to pursue charges against "Ali" for hitting him in the face, and from Carrey's perspective, Rock is avoiding the trouble that comes with filing a police report and dealing with the media. However, Carrey stated that if he were in Rock's shoes, he would have filed a lawsuit, which would have been costly.
"I would have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video would be forever," said Carrey. "It will be pervasive. You know, that insult will endure for a long time. If you want to voice your disapproval from the audience or on social media, you don't have the right to physically assault someone because of what they said."
King asserted that the situation had "escalated," to which Carrey responded by stating, "It didn't escalate. It emerged unexpectedly due to Will's internal turmoil, which I wish him well for."
"I don't have anything against Will Smith. He's accomplished a lot, but that moment was not ideal. It tainted everyone's shining moment last night. Many people put in a lot of effort to get there and receive recognition for their hard work."
Jim Carrey seemed most dismayed that "going through all the stuff that comes with being nominated for an Oscar is no easy task," and he felt that Smith took the moment for a personal meeting with Rock.
Carrey stated that it was a self-centered moment that cast a shadow over the entire devotion.
"Sonic the Hedgehog 3" debuts in theaters on Dec. 20.
