Jennifer Lopez might need to follow Elizabeth Taylor's example for her upcoming film with Ben Affleck.
"Unstoppable," starring Affleck and Lopez, will be premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 6.
Despite the end of their marriage, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck's professional partnership remains strong.
The former couple, who starred together in "Gigli" and "Jersey Girl," both worked on the American biographical sports drama film "Unstoppable," which premieres on Sept. 6 at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie, which portrays the life of Anthony Robles, a wrestler with one leg, was produced by Affleck's company he founded with Damon and Lopez, who stars as Robles' mother. Despite both actors' involvement in the film, recent reports suggest that only Lopez will attend the premiere.
Steve Honig, founder of PR and issue management firm The Honig Company, believes that the former couple has a responsibility to put aside their personal drama and focus on the premiere, as they have done in the past with Elizabeth Taylor.
"When making any decisions, filmmakers should consider what's best for the film, Honig told Planet Chronicle Digital. With hundreds of people involved in the making of a movie, there's an obligation to properly promote it. However, the media must respect the fact that they are there to promote the film, not to obtain personal information."
"Ben and Jennifer have the chance to prove their professionalism by ignoring the rumors and focusing on their work, just like Liz Taylor and Richard Burton did."
While working on the 1965 classic film "Cleopatra," Taylor and Burton fell in love and later married, despite being married to their respective spouses at the time.
Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR, says that the timing of Lopez's divorce filing on Tuesday is not coincidental, despite not being intentional.
"If Liz Taylor and Richard Burton could professionally coexist, so can Ben and Jennifer." — Steve Honig, PR and issue management expert
"According to Eldridge, a trend in Hollywood is emerging where controversy, whether real or fabricated, emerges before a movie's premiere. This is also happening with Blake Lively's film. Interestingly, it seems to happen more frequently with smaller budget movies or those that are released outside the summer-peak."
"The objective is clear, although it may seem clichéd: generate excitement and conversation to increase interest in a movie that might otherwise have lackluster box office sales. Earlier, there was a rumored romance between stars that often dissipated at the end of the promotional tour, but now there is tension, disdain, and divorce."
"Lopez and Affleck's divorce is becoming more difficult to understand, but Lopez is skilled at creating compelling narratives that attract attention. It may not have been intentional, but it's likely not a coincidence or accident either."
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from representatives for Lopez and Affleck.
Lopez and Affleck worked on "Kiss of the Spider Woman" together this year, an adaptation of the 1985 Broadway musical. Filming began in April, around the same time Lopez claimed they had secretly split. Production wrapped in June.
Lopez revealed on "Live with Kelly and Mark" in May that she's in "fighting shape" after finishing her work.
In May, after secretly splitting up a month earlier, Lopez revealed to Kelly Ripa that he had finished a movie called "Kiss of the Spider Woman," which combined singing and dancing, leaving him both exhilarated and exhausted. Now, Lopez is in the best shape of his life and ready to take on new challenges.
In March 2023, Affleck discussed his collaboration with his soon-to-be ex-wife on "Unstoppable" with CBS Sunday Mornings.
"Working with your wife or best friend is a joyful experience," he said. "If you struggle with work relationships, it can lead to depression, anxiety, and pain. On the other hand, if you enjoy your colleagues, you're likely to have a fulfilling life."
Lopez stated that she and Affleck may collaborate again in the future, depending on the project.
"Maybe we love working together and being together so much that we should continue to do so," she added.
On Tuesday, Lopez filed for divorce from Affleck in Los Angeles County Court, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their separation, according to obtained documents.
According to court documents, Lopez stated that she did not want herself or Affleck to receive spousal support and listed their date of separation as April 26.
On the two-year anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony, Lopez filed the divorce papers.
In 2002, Affleck and Lopez became engaged after meeting on the set of their film "Gigli." However, their wedding, which was scheduled for 2004, was canceled at the last minute.
In Las Vegas, Lopez and Affleck got married in a surprise wedding ceremony twenty years later.
Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Affleck and Lopez were splitting up after not being seen together for 47 days. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when Affleck did not attend Lopez's luxurious "Bridgerton"-themed 55th birthday party on July 2.
In "The Greatest Love Story Never Told," Affleck was depicted reluctantly dealing with the public scrutiny that accompanied the couple when they first began dating in the early 2000s.
Lopez is working on both her new album "This is Me…Now" and a high-concept music film titled "This is Me…Now: A Love Story."
"Affleck stated that Jen was inspired by the experience, which is how artists work. He explained that artists draw inspiration from their personal lives, which can be emotionally moving. As a writer and director, Affleck also gets inspired by his personal life, but he feels that private things are sacred and special. This experience was an adjustment for him."
The documentary revealed that they "caved under the pressure" of being a tabloid sensation, which put a strain on their relationship and led to the cancellation of their 2003 wedding just three days before the big day.
While Jen didn't object to the press as strongly as I did initially, I strongly objected to it.

"I said, 'Listen, I don't want a relationship on social media. But then I realized it's not fair to ask. It's like asking someone to marry a boat captain, you want to be with the water. We have different approaches, and we're trying to learn to compromise."
Jane Fonda, who has previously collaborated with Lopez, commented on their public relationship, stating that Lopez was "attempting to demonstrate something."
"Fonda stated, "I am invested in you and Ben, and I want this to work, but I have a concern. It seems like you're trying to prove something instead of just living it. Every other photograph shows the two of you kissing and hugging.""
"That's just us living our life" was the nonchalant response of the "Hustlers" star to the situation.
