Jennie Garth was not expecting Shannen Doherty's death from cancer.
After a yearslong battle with cancer, Doherty passed away on July 13.
Jennie Garth is opening up about the loss of Shannen Doherty.
Garth, who co-starred with Doherty on the iconic TV series "Beverly Hills, 90210," made a brief appearance on the "Today" show this morning to discuss Doherty's passing.
"She confessed that she was still grieving and processing the shock of Shannen's death, despite the fact that they had all known she was fighting cancer for a long time. Despite her initial shock, she couldn't help but admire Shannen's strength and determination as a fighter and a professional."
All of us were taken aback by the sudden turn of events.
Garth mentioned that having his fellow cast members as a support system during both happy and sad times strengthens their bond.
On July 13, 2015, Doherty passed away at the age of 53 after being initially diagnosed with breast cancer.
"She was such a fighter and a pro, I just didn't think that would happen for some reason." — Jennie Garth
Garth and Doherty were among the main cast members of "Beverly Hills, 90210" when it first aired in 1990, alongside Tori Spelling, Luke Perry, Jason Priestley, Brian Austin Green, Ian Ziering, and Gabrielle Carteris.
After the fourth season of the show wrapped, Doherty, who later admitted to frequently being tardy to filming due to a tumultuous home life, was fired.
While working together on "90210," the two actresses often had disagreements, as Doherty revealed in a March episode of her podcast, "Let's Be Clear."
David Silver, portrayed by Green, was her guest, and they talked about how the girls in the cast had conflicts despite the boys getting along well.
Green recounted how challenging and competitive it became for everyone involved. He added, "It was not an easy situation to observe. I recall the guys discussing it."
I remember a fight out front, and Ian and I were there. We stepped into the middle of it to prevent it from escalating.
Doherty explained that the fight between himself and Jennie was over her "Pants Down Day" prank, which involved pulling the pants on some crew members in a humorous way. However, some of the crew members were becoming increasingly frustrated with the prank.
"She always wore men's Calvin Klein boxer shorts under her clothes. So I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I did 'Skirt Up Day,' and oh, my God, she lost it on me. I wasn't in the mood to back down."
In a 2019 interview on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," Garth discussed the same incident. She recalled that she and Doherty had an argument and took it outside, telling Cohen, "I'm a Midwestern girl, and I spent some time in Glendale, Arizona. So, that makes you tough."
According to Doherty's podcast, Green and Ziering were held back from each other by two male cast members, preventing things from becoming physical.
"Garth stated, "I'm pretty sure I got in her face, but we're just both strong Aries women." He added, "We don't back down — no matter what.""
Despite their obvious disagreements while working together, Garth clarified in a social media post about Doherty's death that the two were friends.
"The loss of my longtime friend Shannen, whom I consider one of the strongest people I've ever known, has left me still grieving," she wrote on Instagram. "Our bond was genuine and heartfelt."
Despite being frequently pitted against each other, our real relationship was built on mutual respect and admiration. She was courageous, passionate, determined, and very loving and generous. I will deeply miss her and honor her memory in my heart and memories. My heart breaks for her family, her dog Bowie, and all those who loved her.
