Jelly Roll claims his 16-year-old daughter is "far more intelligent" than he was at the time of his arrest.
Noah, the 8-year-old son of the country music star, is also a star in his own right.
Jelly Roll is a proud girl dad.
The country music star revealed in a recent interview the strong bond he has with his 16-year-old daughter, Bailee, and explained why she is "so much smarter" than he was at her age.
Jelly Roll told People magazine that he had advised his daughter, Miss Sassy, not to use her past to get out of trouble, saying, "I don't judge you based on what you do, but on what I know you're capable of. You're so much smarter and emotionally intelligent than I was at 16. You can read a room so much better, so don't try to talk your way out of getting in trouble by weaponizing my past."
Bailee is "totally ahead" of where the country star was at her age.
He said, "When I see her actions that I find reprehensible, I reflect on my own past behavior at 16 and feel a sense of regret. When I criticize her or push her a bit, it's because I care deeply about her."
The singer, known for his hit song "Save Me," has publicly disclosed his past legal issues and struggle with addiction.
In a 2023 interview with Billboard, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, revealed that he was arrested at the age of 16 and charged as an adult with aggravated robbery and possession with intent to sell.
He served over a year in prison and seven years of probation.
Billboard was informed by Jelly Roll that he never wants to overlook the fact that it was a heinous crime.
He continued, 'This is a grown man reflecting on a 16-year-old who made a terrible decision that could have caused harm, but by some miracle, no one was hurt.'
Since 2017, Bailee has been under the full custody of Jelly Roll, who is also a father to an 8-year-old son named Noah, and his wife Bunnie Xo.
"He informed the People that the girl was very sheltered and had been in the same public school district for 10 years with the same friends since he and Bunnie took custody of her. He believed that this had contributed to her current state."
Jelly Roll revealed that the birth of his daughter motivated him to make changes in his life in October.
The country music star decided to make a change "as soon as she was born" after she found herself "sitting in a jail cell, having $17 of honeybuns and potato chips to her name."
"During an interview on "Sunday TODAY with Willie Geist," Jelly Roll stated, "I am responsible for a child, and I own one outfit, which was in jail. I was the lowest common denominator in life, a crack dealer, and a terrible human being. I realized I needed to change my ways and figure out how to improve my life.""
He recounted the pivotal moment he discovered Bailee's birth while incarcerated and how it altered the course of his life.
"The guest on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in June shared that he was incarcerated as a juvenile for some poor choices and remained in the system for about a decade. He had a daughter, which transformed his life and was similar to the Damascus Road experience where Saul became Paul."
"I was incarcerated and when they knocked on my door and told me she was born, I wept. It was the first time I'd cried, and now I can't stop. I cry at the sight of a squirrel in the street, exclaiming, 'The little squirrel!' After 30 years of not crying, I'm now unable to control my emotions."
In an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, he revealed how his past struggles and his ability to overcome them had a lasting impact on him.
"I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for the challenges I faced. I believe it gave me the strength to speak up. I believe it taught me how to overcome obstacles and adapt to change," he stated at the 2023 CMAs.
He stated, "For years, I was a terrible person, but now I use music to help others and give back as much as possible. This reflects my past and my commitment to always assist those in need."
