In a tragic case of life imitating art, the home of the Paradise fire moviemaker was destroyed by California wildfires.
A new film about the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, California is reportedly set to star Jamie Lee Curtis and Matthew McConaughey.
The filmmaker behind "Rebuilding Paradise" is now experiencing the life she once filmed after losing everything in the Palisades Fire.
On Jan. 7, Tracy Droz Tragos and her family were forced to evacuate their home in Pacific Palisades as it burned to the ground. Having experienced the aftermath of the 2018 Camp Fire, Droz Tragos knew the importance of acting quickly to avoid getting stuck in traffic. The family left with nothing.
"I believed this was a practice run, I don't understand why," Droz Tragos said to The Hollywood Reporter. "You truly don't believe it will happen to you."
Droz Tragos lost everything and has been staying in an Airbnb near her family in Santa Barbara since the disaster. "An entire community was erased from existence," she said to the outlet. "It's not just your home - it's your neighbor's home, the park you used to walk in and enjoy shade from the trees, the place you got coffee, and the school your kid attends. Everything."
Droz Tragos gained recognition for her documentary film "Rebuilding Paradise," which was produced by Ron Howard and utilized her footage from her time spent with residents affected by the 2018 Camp Fire in Butte County.
The Camp Fire, which burned 95% of the area in Paradise, California, nearly destroyed the entire town. However, since then, most of the town has been rebuilt, and thousands have returned to the city.
During her time with residents who had lost everything, the documentary filmmaker gained valuable knowledge on what to grab during a fast evacuation.
"Droz Tragos remembered neighbors asking, 'Why are you bringing toilet paper?' and he replied, 'You never know when you'll need it, and you'll be grateful you have it.'"
Despite being known for housing some of California's elite, Pacific Palisades is not just home to the wealthy and famous.
"Pacific Palisades is often perceived as fancy, but there's a part of it that's not, according to Droz Tragos. "It's multigenerational," he said. "The high school is a cool place where my kid can meet people from all over.""
"The quirky 4th of July parade no longer takes place in the community, as the library and grocery store have disappeared, leaving no touch points behind."
"The barbershop sign that used to be, indicated that if you're wealthy, you reside in Beverly Hills, if you're renowned, you dwell in Malibu, and if you're fortunate, you live in Pacific Palisades."
Droz Tragos has shared her thoughts and updates on her situation on Instagram. The caption alongside a photo of a whiteboard reads, "I’ve been in survival mode - now - 48 hours after learning of the loss of our home and Chris and my home offices (our only offices). We have shifted from being in the immediate aftermath and are in a slightly different "what now" mode. All former to-do lists suddenly meaningless - replaced. We are starting brand new ones."
She too posted a picture of herself with a sign saying, "You never realize the value of toilet paper until it's unavailable."
She wrote in part, "I am unsure how to cope with the sadness that comes in waves. The mug I will never see again, the clothes I have collected for special events over a lifetime, which will never be replaced. A great-great grandmother's watch. Looking at photos of our Christmas tree brings tears to my eyes as I think about how it's all just gone."

The 2018 Camp Fire, which Droz Tragos documented in "Rebuilding Paradise," will be revisited again with Jamie Lee Curtis' "The Lost Bus." Curtis' Comet Pictures and Jason Blum's Blumhouse have been working to develop the film from Lizzie Johnson’s book "Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire."
"The Lost Bus" is a film that follows the story of Kevin McKay, a bus driver, and Mary Ludwig, a school teacher, who saved 22 children from a school during the deadly Camp Fire in California.
According to Deadline, Matthew McConaughey is in talks to star in the film, but it's unclear if a deal has been reached and the project still requires studio approval.
