In 2024, Taylor Swift and Yellowstone creator will dominate the entertainment industry, while Diddy and Justin Baldoni will face career-ending headlines.
Taylor Swift set new records with her 'Eras' tour, while Diddy faced arrest on sex trafficking charges.
As in any business, stars can experience highs and lows.
Just as a celebrity's financial situation can fluctuate greatly from year to year, so too can someone's career trajectory. One year they may be struggling to make ends meet, while the next they could be at the top of their game. Similarly, someone who is doing well in their career could suddenly find themselves at the bottom.
Planet Chronicle Digital examines the celebrities who had a significant impact on 2024, as well as those who faced significant setbacks.
Winner: Taylor Sheridan
In 2024, the Western series "Yellowstone" experienced a successful revival, with creator Taylor Sheridan leading the charge.
The show's fifth season, consisting of six new episodes, premiered in November, with the second half following in January 2023. Despite the absence of star Kevin Costner in the new episodes, the show drew record-breaking viewership. The finale, which aired on Dec. 15, was the most-watched episode in the show's history, according to Variety.
Sheridan expanded his TV empire with his new show "Landman," starring Billy Bob Thornton, while his shows "Lioness," "Tulsa King," and "Mayor of Kingstown" continued this year. Additionally, a spin-off of his beloved western series, "The Madison," was announced.
Winner: Taylor Swift
This year, Taylor Swift maintained her position as a global pop sensation, bringing her highly successful "Eras" tour to international audiences before heading back to North America. She concluded her tour with a final show in Vancouver in December.
After the tour ended, she approved the disclosure of the financial figures, which were later reported by the New York Times as revealing that she made over $2 billion, more than any other concert tour's gross ticket sales.
Swift released a new album, "The Tortured Poets Department," which broke sales and streaming records. Additionally, her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce seems to be thriving, with many fans urging him to propose.
Winner: Pop princesses
In 2024, women in pop music continued to dominate the charts, with mega-stars like Swift leading the way.
Chappell Roan has been making music for years, but it wasn't until this summer that she became a full-fledged pop star. After a successful appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk and the release of her single "Good Luck Babe!", she was invited to perform at Coachella in April. Her performance went viral.
Last year, she released a song titled "HOT TO GO!" which gained massive radio play and attracted larger crowds to her concerts.
In September, Roan won her first MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and in December she won a Billboard Music Award for Top New Artist. She is now nominated for six Grammy Awards, including record of the year.
Sabrina Carpenter, a former Disney star, gained popularity with platinum hits such as "Espresso," "Please Please Please," and "Taste." She, like Roan, is also up for six Grammy Awards.
Billie Eilish achieved great success with her April album "Hit Me Hard and Soft," which reached the top of the charts. She won her second Academy Award for best original song with "What Was I Made For?" the song she wrote for "Barbie." In November, she began a world tour.
Winner: Mature actresses
This year, there has been a rise in movies featuring older actresses with sex appeal.
In the erotic thriller "Babygirl," Nicole Kidman, 57, portrays a character who has a passionate relationship with a man who is significantly younger than her.
Demi Moore, 62, played a daring role in the body horror film "The Substance," where she appeared nude, including a shot that showed off her behind at an unflattering angle. Despite this, she did not request the shot to be altered because she believed it was important to the film's overall message.
Stepping into a vulnerable and exposed place emotionally and physically was liberating, she added.
In December, Pamela Anderson received her first-ever Golden Globe nomination for her role in "The Last Showgirl," fulfilling a lifelong dream.
"We are not all so lucky," she said after being nominated for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture, emphasizing that it's never too late to dream, start again, and stay open to possibilities.
Winner: Jelly Roll
Jelly Roll's career has been on the rise for the past 12 months, with his popularity increasing significantly.
He followed up his successful "Whitsitt Chapel" album with October's "Beautifully Broken," his first No. 1 album in the U.S. He also performed as the musical guest for the season premiere of the historic 50th season of "Saturday Night Live."
Jelly Roll's weight loss journey reached a milestone in November 2024 when he announced he had lost 100 pounds.
While these stars dominated 2024, others faced very public struggles.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs
In September, federal agents in New York arrested Sean "Diddy" Combs on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, following the filing of several civil lawsuits against him.
Despite his claims of innocence, Combs has remained in jail, awaiting his trial, which is scheduled for May 5, 2025. He and his legal team have repeatedly requested bail, but each request has been denied, with judges expressing concern that he may tamper with witnesses if released.
If convicted, Combs could be sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Since his initial arrest, more accusations have been made against the rapper. Recently, he was sued for $15 million by a woman named LaTroya Grayson, who attended a "Black Party" hosted by Combs in 2006. Grayson alleged that Combs drugged and sexually assaulted her at the party, while his lawyer denied the claims.
Jay-Z and Beyoncé
In a lawsuit against Combs, an anonymous accuser alleged that she was raped by Combs at an MTV VMAs after-party in 2000 when she was 13 years old. She also claimed that an unnamed male celebrity and an unnamed female celebrity were present during the alleged assaults. The suit was re-filed in December, with Jay-Z named as the male celebrity. The female celebrity has not been named.
Jay-Z's legal team has filed to dismiss the lawsuit and requested that the accuser's name be made public, while Jay-Z has strongly denied the accusation.
Last week, New York Judge Analisa Torres ruled against Jay-Z, stating that his lawyer's "persistent submission of hostile motions with inflammatory language and personal attacks is unsuitable, a waste of judicial resources, and a strategy unlikely to benefit his client."
The family elevator fight and cheating rumors about Beyoncé and Jay-Z did not come as a surprise after Diddy's lawsuit.
In 2024, Beyoncé, Jay-Z's wife of 16 years, faced controversy, while Jay-Z faced legal woes.
In March, she released her debut country album, "Cowboy Carter," which received mixed reviews. While some admired her interpretation of the genre, others criticized the album, with some going as far as to call it a parody of country music.
She made waves for her performance at the halftime show of the Christmas Day football game between the Houston Texans and the Baltimore Ravens, but at one point, she made a finger-gun gesture, which is banned by the NFL.
Some fans speculated whether Beyoncé would also receive fines for making the same gesture as the players.
Justin Baldoni
In "It Ends with Us," Blake Lively accused her co-star and director Justin Baldoni of sexually harassing her, prompting her to file a complaint with the California Civil Rights department this month.
The complaint, which preceded a lawsuit, claimed that Baldoni harassed Lively during the filming of the movie and detailed a meeting where Lively demanded that Baldoni cease adding sex scenes, discussing his genitals, showing nude videos and photographs to her, among other things.
Baldoni's publicists were named in Lively's complaint, alleging that they orchestrated a smear campaign to ruin her reputation and harm her credibility.
Lively stated in a New York Times interview that he hopes his legal action will expose the unethical tactics used to harm individuals who speak out about misconduct and safeguard those who may become victims.
According to Bryan Freedman, an attorney for Baldoni, the claims made against him are false, outrageous, and intended to harm his reputation by rehashing a narrative in the media.
Freedman recently revealed to People magazine that he intends to "reveal" the "inaccurate" story presented by Lively's lawsuit against Baldoni.
The lawyer of the actor stated that the upcoming lawsuit is not a reaction or a counterclaim, but rather a purposeful pursuit of the truth.
Zach Bryan
In November, Brianna "Chickenfry" LaPaglia accused country star Zach Bryan of emotional abuse.
LaPaglia, an internet personality, discussed her tumultuous relationship with Bryan on the "BFFs" podcast, which she co-hosts with Dave Portnoy and Josh Richards. She revealed, "The past year has been the most challenging period of my life, as I grappled with the abuse inflicted by this individual. Despite my efforts to move on, I am still fearful because my brain has been rewired, making me apprehensive of his wrath. I am cautious not to provoke him, as I am still scared of his reaction."
She claimed that Bryan had abused her and offered her a $12 million NDA to keep her quiet about their relationship. When she refused the NDA, she said, "I don't want to buy a house in two years and think, 'This is the money from the guy who destroyed me and broke me for a year?' F--- that, f--- you, I don't want your money."
LaPaglia stated in a later podcast episode that Bryan's silence regarding the accusations is "deafening."
Dave Grohl
Since becoming famous as Nirvana's drummer, Dave Grohl has spent many years in the limelight. He later founded the Foo Fighters and developed a likable, relatable image.
In September, it was especially shocking to many fans when he admitted to fathering a child with someone other than his wife.
"I've welcomed a new baby daughter into my life, despite not being married. I am committed to being a devoted and nurturing father to her. I deeply care for my wife and kids, and I am working hard to rebuild our relationship and seek their forgiveness."
As we move forward together, we are grateful for your consideration towards the children involved.
Since 2003, Grohl and his wife, Jordyn Blum, have been married and share three daughters: Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10.
