Hollywood trend of older women dating younger men is driven by the desire for 'freedom': expert.
Mark Estes, 13 years younger than the 'Laguna Beach' star, is her current boyfriend.
Women in Hollywood are increasingly dating younger men, as exemplified by Kristin Cavallari's relationship with a man 13 years her junior.
Last week, Cavallari and her new partner, social media influencer Mark Estes, shared their romantic relationship on social media, with Cavallari expressing her happiness with Estes.
Estes posted a video on TikTok featuring him and his partner sharing a kiss, captioned "Ready to fall."
According to dating coach and author Damona Hoffman, the new relationship of the "Laguna Beach" star makes sense.
According to Hoffman, it makes sense that Kristin Cavallari, who ended a seven-year marriage a few years ago and is a busy entrepreneur and mom of three, would be seeking a sense of freedom in her new relationship.
"It appears that she and her new partner, Mark Estes, share the same relationship goals at the moment. They are enjoying each other's company and exploring the world together. While the future of their relationship remains uncertain, I hope more individuals could appreciate the value of relationships for both the short and long term."
Alessandra Conti, the celebrity matchmaker, isn't as hopeful about the couple's prospects.
Conti, who has matched thousands of couples over the past 13 years, believes that this age gap is significant and does not see this pair lasting.
Most males do not have their prefrontal cortex fully developed until age 25. During their early 20s, men, particularly those in or around the Hollywood scene, are often focused on self-discovery, exploring their purpose, and gaining experience with dating.
"Although Kristin is 37 years old, has three children, and leads an exciting life, her priorities are vastly different from a 24-year-old with minimal responsibilities. While the initial stages of their relationship may be thrilling, I predict it will ultimately fail due to differences in priorities and life stages."
Still, Cavallari is ignoring any negativity about her relationship.
In a TikTok video, she joked about the age gap while lip-syncing to a popular remixed sound about being arrested.
She wrote in the caption, "When they're all up in arms that I'm dating a 24-year-old. Andddd?" to emphasize her point.
""If he were twelve years older, no one would question his age, just as women now have more power and choice in relationships, leading to a rewrite of outdated dating rules," Hoffman observed."
Hollywood productions are increasingly featuring age gap relationships between older women and younger men.
An upcoming movie, "The Idea of You," showcases Anne Hathaway in a sizzling romance with a boy band member portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine.
According to Amazon's official synopsis, the novel follows Solène (Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mom who unexpectedly falls in love with 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Galitzine), the lead singer of August Moon, the world's most popular boy band.
In the trailer, Galitzine responds to Hathaway's statement, "I’m too old for you," with "No you’re not," and they share a passionate kiss.
Recently, there has been a trend of older women dating younger men, as dating dynamics have changed and younger men now have greater access to older women through social media, dating apps, and online communities, according to Hoffman.
"It is common for men's sex drive to peak in their 20s, while women's sex drive peaks in their 30s. As a result, single women may look for younger partners to align with their libido."
An example of a successful older woman/younger man relationship is Cavallari.
Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz
Since 2019, Heidi Klum, 50, and her husband Tom Kaulitz, 34, have been married.
In a recent interview with Glamour Germany, Klum dismissed the criticism she has received about their relationship.
"She believes it's often due to spitefulness," the outlet reported. "Many people may think she's had too much luck in life. She has a great job, travels the world, can afford expensive things, and now has a great man."
Klum discussed her approach to answering questions about the age difference between her and her partner.
I'm 50 and no longer 20," she said. "I'm not a young girl who hasn't experienced anything yet or has no idea about life. Time won't stand still for me, and Tom will never catch up with me. I'll always be 16 years older, and I'm aware of that.
"While age may not be a significant factor in physical attraction, it is not a determining factor in compatibility. Men in their 20s can be attracted to women in their 30s, and vice versa. Similarly, age is not the only factor in determining personality compatibility, as life experiences and maturity levels are not necessarily tied to a person's age."
Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Since 2018, Nick Jonas, 31, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, 41, have been married and share a daughter born in 2022.
In April 2023, Jonas Chopra stated on "Today" that he doesn't think about their 10-year age gap as much as people do.
At the time, she was 35 and had different priorities than the 25-year-old rockstar she met. She wanted to settle down, get married, and have a baby, which made her hesitant to give the relationship much of a chance.
After their first date in 2018, they were married seven months later.
"I desired stability, but I didn't fully appreciate Nick until our first date. We spent the entire evening together, and I realized my husband is like a wise old soul. He embodies stability in human form," she stated.
Joan Collins and Percy Gibson
Joan Collins, a "Dynasty" star, and her fifth husband, Percy Gibson, have a 32-year age difference, which Collins disregards.
"Before getting married, we were close friends who worked together on a play and enjoyed each other's company. We hung out together and saw each other the following year. We wrote love letters and realized that we were on the same wavelength."
In 2002, Collins, 90, and Gibson, 58, tied the knot. She defended their relationship, stating that age is merely a number and it's never too late to find love at any point in life.
Cher and Alexander Edwards
Alexander Edwards and Cher have a 40-year age gap, which the "Turn Back Time" singer frequently jokes about.
"In 2023, she shared with Extra that sometimes she talks to him and he doesn't recognize who she's referring to. For instance, she said, "Yesterday, I asked, 'Do you know who Clark Gable is?' Someone responded, 'Of course,' but most of my references are too old for him to understand.""
Although there are times when we misunderstand each other, Cher stated, "I don't like discussing how happy I am, but yes, we enjoy our time together."
In November 2022, the couple made their relationship public after meeting at Paris Fashion week in the summer.
He told People magazine that he hates when people say people are special, but since lots of people say he's special, he can say that others are special too.
"Despite any circumstances, I cherish being with him. He brings me joy and we share great moments. My experience has taught me that it's never too late. Even if you analyze the data, it may seem hopeless. But we've been together for a year, and even if it was only a year, it would have been worth it. I've had an amazing time."
But not all romances with wide age gaps find their happily ever after.
May/December relationships often fail because age can be a destructive statement if two individuals have different major life goals, even though people often say that age is just a number.
In age gap relationships, couples may have different relationship goals due to their varying life stages. For instance, a younger man may desire children, while an older woman may already have children or have passed her child-bearing window.
"An age gap can be a challenge in a relationship when one partner is ready for retirement while the other is still working long hours to advance their career. However, if both partners are at the same stage of life or share the same relationship goals, they can overcome this obstacle."
Here are some famous age gap couples that did not last.
Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello
Despite their small four-year age difference, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello's age gap influenced their divorce when it came to having kids.
Vergara, 51, admitted to El País that she is newly divorced from her second husband, Manganiello, whom she was with for 10 years. The marriage ended because her husband was younger.
"I didn't want to be an old mom because I felt it wasn't fair to the baby. Although I respect those who choose to have kids, it's not something I want to do anymore."
Vergara stated that she had her son at the age of 19. Now, at 31, she is ready to be a "grandmother, not a mother."
Biologically, women have a limit on their ability to have children past a certain age, which can be overcome through egg freezing or IVF.
"The desire for children can change over time, as a man in his early 20s may not want children but may change his mind in his 30s or 40s. This can make it impossible for the couple to have children unless they have prepared for that possibility. Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello's split was primarily due to Sofia's lack of desire to have children, which was cited as the primary reason for their separation."
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher
After divorcing her second husband, Bruce Willis, Demi Moore started dating and eventually married Ashton Kutcher, who was 25 at the time and she was 41.
In 2005, Kutcher married Moore and became a stepfather to her daughters Rumer, Tallulah, and Scout from her previous marriage to Willis. The couple separated in 2011 and finalized their divorce in 2013.
Kutcher, years after their split, revealed how he unexpectedly became a stepfather at a young age, around the same age as Moore's daughters.
"At 26, I was responsible for three children aged 8, 10, and 12. That's how some teen parents experience their 20s," he said to Esquire in 2023. "They were great then, and they're great now."
He also spoke about a miscarriage early in their relationship.
"The pain of losing a child you believe you'll have is immense, and everyone copes with it differently," Kutcher stated.
"If I didn't love kids, I wouldn't have married a woman with three kids. The thought of having another child would have been amazing. Despite not knowing the reason, I had to have that experience."
