Hollywood's 'uncertainty' navigated by Jude Law
The Disney+ series, 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,' features a 51-year-old British actor as its lead.
For nearly three decades, Jude Law has been recognized as one of Hollywood's top actors. Despite this, he has encountered numerous obstacles, both personal and professional, throughout his career.
The 51-year-old British actor, who stars in the new Disney+ series "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," discussed the "uncertainties" of Hollywood and shared why he has no regrets in an exclusive interview with Planet Chronicle Digital.
"Law stated, "I don't have regrets. Not really. I believe that you can't spend your time looking back on life like that." He added, "You live and you learn, and being in a career in a creative business means that you are constantly learning because you are making different things, several different things over a short period of time with very different people, with different hopes and aspirations.""
He stated that one moment you could be in a low-budget indie film, and the next you could be in a big-budget franchise like 'Star Wars'. These two types of projects have different expectations and challenges, and you need to be adaptable, willing to learn, fail, pick yourself up, and keep going.
In a recent interview with GQ Magazine UK, Law admitted that his 2004 romantic comedy "Alfie" was a "bad move" on his part. Despite making only $35 million worldwide on a reported $60 million production budget, according to Variety.
"At that time, I was in a strong position because I had just received another Oscar nomination for 'Cold Mountain.' However, I felt that 'Alfie' was a bad move because it didn't elevate the material and was too cheesy. I believe it was made for too much money, and I was probably paid too much, which I underestimated at the time. I regretted my decision to focus on the heartthrob and charismatic lead, as it didn't work out."
Although Law experienced a hiccup, he viewed it as an opportunity to learn.
"The film didn't appeal to my taste and didn't meet my expectations, which I now realize was due to the pressure we put on it with the budget. This experience shifted my career slightly, and I learned from it. Although hindsight can be helpful, it also sits in a complicated part of me, as my relationship with the film is more about aesthetics. While I appreciate that others enjoy it, it didn't quite hit the note I had hoped for. Nonetheless, it's all part of the process."
He added that he had a great experience making the film and learned a lot from it.
In "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew," Law portrays Jod Na Nawood, a character who may become a Jedi.
"He told Planet Chronicle Digital that he was really drawn to the concept of the role he took on, as he found it to be a refreshing perspective on the beloved Star Wars universe. He was particularly inspired by the way it connected with innocent or inspired boys, and he had watched the first Star Wars film in the late '70s. He was thrilled to make the protagonists of their story, and he loved the complexity and contradictions of the character they had created for him."
"Skeleton Crew" follows the story of four children who stumble upon a mysterious discovery on their supposedly safe planet, leading them to become lost in a dangerous and unfamiliar galaxy. Their journey home will be filled with unexpected allies and enemies, making it a more thrilling adventure than they ever anticipated.
Law stated that filming the project was a pleasant experience overall.
The actor, who has been nominated for numerous Oscars and Golden Globe Awards, has kept his personal life private throughout his career.
"Law stated to GQ that there are parts of him that remain unknown to the public, which he has never shared or felt any desire to reveal. He finds it frustrating that, despite being in the public eye for nearly 30 years, certain perceptions of him persist due to narratives and stories from decades ago that are constantly rehashed. However, Law believes that there isn't enough of him visible to the public for them to question those perceptions."
Despite Hollywood's unpredictability, the actor has found a constant influence to be a significant impact.
"My relationship with my wife, Phil, has been a significant influence on my life. I've never felt happier, more supported, or more secure at home. When you meet someone who understands your work and needs, you feel nurtured, and that's exactly what happened to me. I don't want to sound like it was any different before, but when you click with someone, it makes all the difference."
In addition to being a psychologist, Phil has a healthy relationship with us where we frequently discuss our emotions, relationships with friends and family, and he provides insightful perspectives on all of it.
The eight-episode series "Star Wars: Skeleton Crew" will debut its first two episodes on Monday, with subsequent episodes released on Tuesdays for the remainder of the season.
