Hollywood movies cannot be replaced by AI for this reason: Ben Affleck is confident.
Matt Damon and Affleck share ownership of production company Artists Equity.
Artificial intelligence is receiving a lot of attention from Ben Affleck.
At the CNBC's Delivering Alpha 2024 investor summit, the actor discussed the impact of AI on the entertainment industry.
He stated that AI would likely replace movies as the last thing to be replaced.
"AI can produce imitative verse that sounds Elizabethan, but it cannot write Shakespeare. The ability to have multiple actors in a room and discern and construct is something that AI currently cannot do, and I believe it will take a significant amount of time for it to improve."
He continued, stating that AI will disintermediate the laborious, less creative, and more costly aspects of filmmaking, thereby bringing down costs, lowering the barrier for entry, allowing more voices to be heard, and making it easier for those who want to create 'Good Will Huntings' to do so.
The actor, who founded his own production company with a friend, stated that AI is only a tool that can mimic others' work.
"Affleck stated that AI merely borrows from a pre-existing library to construct something, implying that no new creation occurs."
Affleck maintained that the statement would be true for a long time, while the moderator pointed out that it was only accurate at that moment.
"The craftsman knows how to work, while the artist knows when to stop. And I believe that learning when to stop will be a challenging task for AI, as it involves taste."
He acknowledged that the visual effects industry is facing financial difficulties due to advancements in technology that have reduced costs. However, he emphasized that this does not mean that human filmmakers will be replaced.
He eventually stated that the objective was to employ AI to facilitate the more intricate aspects of filmmaking, allowing studios to produce more content for viewers at a faster pace.
Affleck proposed that AI technology could generate a new revenue stream in the industry, allowing companies to negotiate rights to intellectual properties for consumers' benefit, such as the ability to pay $30 for the technology to create their own episode of "Succession."
A video of Affleck's comments was shared on X, previously Twitter, and it quickly went viral, with many people weighing in on what he had to say.
One person wrote that they didn't expect Ben Affleck to have the most articulate and realistic explanation about the future of video models and Hollywood.
"No surprise has been as great as Ben Affleck's intelligence and articulation in the past 10 years," another comment stated.
I love how he talked about it, and it applies across industries, too.
Some people believe that he is correct in the short term regarding the decline of production costs for VFX, color, and sound design, but they argue that he is completely incorrect in the long term. In the future, AI will replace all humans and produce hyper-compelling films and games at an unparalleled level.
Another X user suggested that he might be underestimating the rate of AI advancement.
Planet Chronicle Digital has reached out to Affleck for further comment.
