Hollywood executives are avoiding R-rated comedies due to fear of being fired, according to Vince Vaughn.
Vince Vaughn believes Hollywood executives underestimate the simplicity of making films like he's done in the past.
Vince Vaughn is discussing why he believes that R-rated comedies, which helped launch his career, are no longer being produced.
In 2024, Vaughn appeared on Sean Evans' "Hot Ones" show and asserted that Hollywood executives often "overthink" the creation of comedy films such as "Wedding Crashers" or "Swingers."
Vaughn stated on the show that executives often overthink things, leading to confusion and incorrect answers, similar to if someone in geometry incorrectly stated that 87 degrees was a right angle instead of the correct 90 degrees.
"An idea emerged, such as the notion that one must possess an IP."
Since he began his career in Hollywood, the intellectual property of films has undergone a shift. Vaughn cited his 2003 film, "Old School," as an example of something that resonated with the audience.
When they were older, the three friends, who also starred in the movie alongside Will Ferrell and Luke Wilson, founded a college fraternity together.
He explained that the people in charge are more focused on avoiding getting fired than on achieving greatness, so they follow strict rules that are difficult to change.
"The people in charge don’t want to get fired more so than they’re looking to do something great." — Vince Vaughn
As long as they adhere to the rules, they won't lose their job because they can argue, "Look, I made a movie based on the board game 'Payday,' so even though the movie didn't succeed, you can't dismiss me, right?" Vaughn added.
Despite the absence of recent movies resembling those from Vaughn's late '90s and early 2000s career, he remains optimistic about the future.
"Vaughn stated that people desire to laugh and view content that seems risky or edgy. He predicts that this trend will become more prevalent in the film industry in the near future."
