Griffin Dunne, a friend of Carrie Fisher, makes a surprising revelation about how she lost her virginity.
A chance encounter with Harrison Ford is included in Dunne's memoir, "The Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir."
Carrie Fisher and Griffin Dunne had an unconventional and profound bond.
In New York City, Fisher and Dunne shared a room for a brief period, with Dunne being a successful actor and Fisher on the brink of her big break in "Star Wars."
In his new memoir, "The Friday Afternoon Club: A Family Memoir," published on Tuesday, Dunne recounts their friendship and his assertion that she lost her virginity to him while dating another man.
In "The Sunday Times," Dunne stated that Carrie never became his girlfriend as she knew that being lovers would limit their possibilities. She was a virgin when they met and was fascinated by every detail of his sexual encounters, from his first kiss to his postcoital anxieties. Her interest was so intense that he felt like a corpse being dissected.
He continued, remembering that she had a boyfriend at the time who was seeking advice on how to win her over.
"Of all the suitors who were confused, I liked Donald the most and rooted for him. However, I couldn't tell him that Carrie had chosen to lose her virginity to me shortly into their courtship. Despite the messy nature of the situation, there was a certain logic to Carrie's approach. For years, I had been guiding her through every possible sexual act like an ordnance handler instructing a housewife on how to defuse a bomb. Yes, it can be scary, but not if you know what you're doing," Dunne wrote.
Their friendship was the subject of more detailed explanation by him, including the ongoing prank war that persisted until one day they shared a kiss.
We both understood that our actions under the covers would not affect our friendship.
Before becoming roommates, their encounter occurred at Debbie Reynolds' request.
Dunne recounted in his "CBS Sunday Morning" interview that Debbie had called him and informed him that his daughter wanted to relocate to New York, but he wouldn't allow her to live alone. As a result, they ended up sharing an apartment.
Fisher recalled her initial dismissive attitude towards her breakout role in "Star Wars," saying, "I got this part in this movie, and I go, 'It's ridiculous, but I gotta take it.'"
The release of "Star Wars" in 1977 resulted in an instant success and global sensation.
Dunne stated that the film's success and Fisher's rapid rise to fame were like The Beatles returning to life.
Having a best friend who suddenly becomes overnight famous can be a unique experience. It's also challenging to navigate when you are the one who gains sudden fame.
Dominick Dunne's memoir recounts his upbringing in a renowned family, including aunt Joan Didion, uncle John Gregory Dunne, and his own father.
Mark Hamill, the actor who played Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars," had a chance encounter with Harrison Ford, who played Han Solo, before Ford's fame.
Fisher was asked by Dunne if there were any roles in "Star Wars" available for him, according to the Sunday Times excerpt.
Mark Hamill had already claimed the lead, as she informed him.
"Harrison Ford is an older guy who is not well-known," he wrote.
Joan Didion, my aunt the writer, hired a carpenter to build a deck for her beach house near Malibu when I was 17. I eagerly assisted him by handing him nails and digging for hardware from his worn canvas toolkit. In return, he would give me one of his Marlboros, which I would clip off the filters because that's what he did.
Carrie's ex-boyfriend, Dunne, asserted that he smoked marijuana from Ford and admired him greatly, while simultaneously feeling envious of Carrie's close relationship with him.
In her memoir "The Princess Diarist," published in 2016, Fisher admitted to having an affair with Ford while filming "Star Wars."
"She told People, "It was so intense. The week was filled with Han and Leia, while the weekend was dominated by Carrie and Harrison.""
She fondly remembered Ford after sending him a copy of her memoir before publication.
"Although I was inexperienced, I trusted something about him," she remembered. "He was kind."
